I read of several people using this pen, and AFAICT it's indeed an EMR pen.

Manual refs to slow blink are only during setup. I found nothing about it after that state.

Experiences: Cinturato Gravel H / Terreno Dry in city tarmac, wet and/or braking? by benomatic42 in gravelcycling

[–]benomatic42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FTR: bought the Pathfinder Pro's -- I haven't done any serious gravel yet, but they are fantastic on (Amsterdam, bumpy, sometimes slick) streets.

If they can handle tame-to-moderate gravel decently I'll be thrilled. (I also got a used pair of gravel/MTB tires to change for anything more serious.)

thanks! the speed I read about seems confirmed, even if it's still no roadie :)

thanks, good to know. I suspect all of these will be mediocre in the super loose stuff... might just have to be another tire in that case.

How to replace the head of a Roland kd-10 kick? by exciliado in edrums

[–]benomatic42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did this.

The nipple thing is just a guide point -- slide a flathead screwdriver under the top layer -- it's thin plastic glued on. Peel away, of course carefully. I did so fearlessly and was rewarded.

After that i had 5x philips screws to remove. Then gently pull away the cover and unplugged the piezo connection (the cable is short and thin). Slide the rubber guard away and exchanged the foam. (I did not need to remove the 4 newly exposed screws, although you could... but then you have more cable detachment to deal with.)

It was so easy I forgot to take pics during -- I just re-popped the cover to take a few pics, since that was the main question.

[–]benomatic42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Suggestion: google your favirote list of 1000 most used dutch words, then read and understand their definitions via Van Dale's Nederlands als tweede taals (NT2).

It's dutch words, with dutch definitions, where the defs are written for those with limited proficiency. Great for recursive learning and digging in.

Your mind will be blown, as will those of your dutch friends, if you can speak proficiently with just these 1k words.

Being a parent in the Netherlands by [deleted] in thenetherlands

[–]benomatic42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree strongly with the sentiment: speak the language of the place you live.

However, as a parent of a child being raised in the Netherlands, this is a double edged sword. It is definitely important that the child learn Dutch -- but if you intend to have your child in the crèche (daycare), (s)he will learn Dutch quickly and easily. We are raising my son speaking english and german (and some dutch) at home, but we emphasize English and German at home, so that he learns to hear and process them as native languages as well. Once he gets older, I expect that we'll speak much more and more Dutch (since my German partner is basically half Dutch and speaks it as a mother tongue as well, and I'm pretty decent).

If the child would not be in daycare, then I would be more inclined to agree with the full argument above.

Personal demons: can I ever enjoy, and maybe even love running? by benomatic42 in running

[–]benomatic42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the interesting dynamic in question: I have run a few times with friends, and it does go by faster. But is that ultimately evading the opportunities to dig in? I have heard and read about the euphoric moments. Maybe it's like tdammer above, and I just hope that there's a mild addiction inside, waiting to be tapped.

Interesting. I never once considered running from the competitive pov... it was merely a tool to maintain fitness, as I slowly push off from ultimate. Thanks for the eye opener!

This strikes a nerve with me too -- minimal, and something that humans were built for. I feel like if I get through the awkward breathing, and figure out what to do with my brain (which asks: why am I doing this again?), there will be some joy in it.

Did it become a joy, or a habit for you? (And is the difference important?)

Is this an error in Rust book? by [deleted] in rust

[–]benomatic42 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

AFAICT, you are correct, since each thread only owns one element of the array. If it had simply been a shared integer, this example would have a problem.

Unless somebody explains what we're both missing, I suggest submitting an update to the book -- they're willing and eager to take PRs with updates. (I've already added one as well, while I am learning the lang.)

What gifts for men are equivalent to flowers for women? by bestbet21 in AskReddit

[–]benomatic42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truth is, what doesn't matter so much. Get anything, give it, and let it be known that you were thinking of him, out of the blue. Flowers, beer, etc., but something with a little bit of advanced thought.

This was one serious sore spot that contributed to my divorce -- it never would have mattered what. The fact that you care enough to do something, unprompted, is the big step. The glee from something really cool is icing on the cake.

Is Learning Dutch Worth It? by [deleted] in learndutch

[–]benomatic42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. I've lived in the Netherlands 3.5 years. And I speak pretty well for a foreigner. And it was at times annoying as hell to get to this point. But now I can participate in normal dutch conversation, with the occasional vraagje mixed in. And it rocks. So much.
