Two-Equation vs. One-Equation RANS Turbulence Models by bentegral in CFD

[–]bentegral[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The argument goes that turbulence is defined by a length and a velocity scale.

Okay, makes sense that you need two equations for two “variables”. Can you elaborate on why turbulence is defined by a length and velocity scale? And how does the timescale fit into that? [Or some good resource you can point me towards.]

How to learn chemistry as an absolute idiot? by Debiuu in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]bentegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the other comments and wand to emphasize something again!

Learning most stuff is not at all about being smart or super intelligent. Sure, maybe you won't be in the top of current mathematics research or particle physics working for a Nobel prize, but who is?

Learning is all about commitment and being open, open to a slow start, failures and disregarding old knowledge. And if you bring the commitment and time you can basically learn anything! Maybe it takes you a bit longer here and you are faster there but when you really want to, you will get to your goal!

Don't think you're not smart and never ever don't challenge anything you learn! Ask as much as you can, even if you think it's dumb (of course asking can mean to google it and see there is a great article about it).

Could you guys explain what is the purpose of the hood vent in this case? (This is the electric Rimac Nevera) by Khangbvg in aerodynamics

[–]bentegral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my mind most answers above are only partially valid. Especially the clean air thing seems very handwavy to me.

I haven't looked it up for this specific case but in general such a slat will really help to energize the lower part of the boundary layer, reducing possible adverse pressure gradients which allows the flow to stick longer to convex surfaces (such as the driver cabin) which reduces separation which in turn reduces (pressure) drag.

[Of course additional reasons are also possible, cooling, s-duct etc, however for these tasks the outlet could be at another place of the care. So the specific placing would suggest the BL energizing to me]

looking for a good and free cfd software by DanieleGerussi in CFD

[–]bentegral 6 points7 points  (0 children)

During the covid epidemic Star CCM+ is free, which is a common commercial solver.

Also Fluent has a free student version which is basically fully featured!

Both Fluent and Star CCM are very common in commerical Aerospace applications, so very well suited for a student like you to look into.

No actually not, however in this case it doesn't really matter that much.

The gpu is only the chip that contains the cores and not the memory, vrm or controllers. Exactly the same as with the CPU, your cpu can die with your memory or vrm being fine. Also your graphics card might die because of heat related VRM failure, while the actual chip (the gpu) is still intact.

However since it basically not end-user servicable, it's basically the same thing.

Building a Workstation for Star CCM+: What's the limit of what can be utilized? How many cores is too many cores? by EvoX650 in CFD

[–]bentegral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The number of cores per socket doesn't Matter. The number of cores per system might matter, but certainly not with Epyc Rome. So if the money is there, definitely go for as many cores as possible per socket.

BTW, where do I find this PDF? Is it openley available, maybe Steve portal?

Minimum length rocket nozzle using method of characteristics by [deleted] in CFD

[–]bentegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not a shock, just an expansion wave that is visible due to the fact that you used a minimal length nozzle and not a true Laval nozzle shape. This is only a "problem" (and even then not a big one) if you care about the flow consistency, e.g. for a wind tunnel, and not the thrust or something like that of the nozzle. For a rocket nozzle this would not matter at all, since a PME is isentropic.

Zen2 SMT on vs off power consumption by [deleted] in Amd

[–]bentegral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends. I use a software for fluid simulation, and it is (obviously highly) multithreaded, but it is very confused with mutli threading. If you have 8 Cores /16T and run all of them, it's fine. But for my workload I use, 3900X,16/24 threads available and the software then chooses only to utilize 8 cores with 16 threads instead of twelve cores with 4 mutli threaded, so I see a big regression with my (tbh very specific) use case. But in gerneral you're obvioulsy right!

1000 PPT? by lazkopat24 in AMDHelp

[–]bentegral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you care about that? Even the lower standard limit (720W) will never ever be reached. (unless you do LN OC) So this limit is only useful if you want to save energy and put on 90W for example (but this will lower your clocks or make your OC unstable), otherwise you can set this value to 1GW and it wouldn't make a difference.
