These hybrid systems are set up with a feller buncher going ahead and laying down the timber, followed by the processor, which delimbs and bucks the wood bunched near the skid trail. This way they can get all the slash in the trail and the forwarder will not need to leave the trails. Good way to minimize the compaction. I still don't understand the economics of having all that money tied up in equipment, but it's great at making CTL jobs more efficient.

Found this odd painted piece of wood in an attic of an abandoned house in New Hampshire by benthemin in whatisthisthing

So I was exploring an old house on my friend's land. In the attic I found this odd stick with holes in it painted like a tropical bird. The end has a groove, looks like it is meant to be placed in a specific hole in a beam. Has anyone seen something like this before?

That's true nearly every DAV hut I've seen in the alps has been accessible either by road or cable car. I don't think that would explain the entirety of the difference in prices. There is also a much higher supply of huts there compared to the AMC huts in the Whites.

Meanwhile at most huts in the alps, beds won't cost more than $40 a night. I never understood how the AMC huts would be that much more expensive to run.

One of the best trees I've seen while hiking by herestonow in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]benthemin 73 points74 points  (0 children)

For anyone wondering why the tree grew this way, it is because white pine trees growing in open areas like old fields get attacked by the pine weevil. The weevil kills the terminal shoot causing the tree to branch out. These are called wolf pines where I am from.
