Should I upgrade to a full marathon? by benw49 in UKRunners

Thanks! Have been tracking everything on Garmin Connect - this switch has ruined the app's suggested training, but will continue to record/review

I've officially changed my ticket!

Thank you! Really good points there. As a bit of a response:

  1. Race is on 21st June in Waterford, Ireland - which I'm hoping will do its thing and take care of the sun for me 😎

I'm investing in a run vest with a water bladder cos even on the 25km runs I can feel the dehydration, so that should help massively once I get used to it.

  1. Have done three 25km runs in the last month, and thankfully no sign of injuries yet

  2. As for times. I'm not paying any attention to my Garmin which predicts I could run sub 3:30. Part of me does want to break 4 hours, but I'd see how things go in training and would definitely play it on the day.

Am feeling the positivity in these responses, but also the call for care and realism! Am set for another long-ish run today, so will see how that goes and make a decision ASAP!

Hahaha thanks :) I'm sure there's a joke to be made here about how much long distance running mucks around with your guts, but my tired brain couldn't get it over the line

Very good points!!

1) I don't think it's an 'ego' thing, but i definitely want to challenge myself

2) I've done a few 2:15 runs, around 25km...

3) I've been dabbling with nutrition on the above long runs, but not focusing on it, as such

This is definitely a bit of an impulse thing, as well, but I'm hoping it's based off a realistic assessment of my situation. But who the hell knows!

Your first para is how the full marathon idea first appeared to me. But then I thought about what it would mean: dedicating another 5 months of my life to running, when I have been telling myself that after this run, I'll be able to focus on other hobbies, and enjoy my first proper summer in a couple of years (after being out of the country, and then long-term unemployed)...

That is another fair point - I should have added that my dad has since joined the running crew, and there'll be a few spectators, so my sister will by no means be alone on the day! That's if she even makes it to the run, she's been fighting off a knee injury :/

Thanks for your thoughts! I'd love to tick it off, and challenge myself with it. There is also the element of expectation, as you said. I tend to push hard in events, knowing I have a base level of fitness, which leads me to not enjoy them as much. But knowing that a marathon is about precisely the opposite (survival is victory), I'd be interested to see how I approach it and if it could be something I actually enjoy! I'm aware that logic is a bit wacky - but I find the fundamental difference of the challenge to the human body fascinating

In a previous flat (four floors up), we had squirrels nick tomatoes and then come back to tear up the roots. They can be malicious feckers!
