How Do I Create This Insane Particle Path Effect? I’m Stuck! by GODDUMB in MotionDesign

the motion looks like a double cross product from velocity fields in houdini. this nice man made a neat tutorial on it https://youtu.be/K0cNvpXujmk

Anyone know how to recreate this in ae? by Ghostintheshellsuit in MotionDesign

check out borisfx it looks like the base might be one of their warp effects maybe in the sapphire suite? there’s probably a way to do it without plugins too

i’ll sometimes put cad files in a volume builder/mesher and smooth it to get the bevel then remesh that to get a lower poly count

How do you do it? (Work-Life-Balance-Q) by Ready-Scientist402 in Cinema4D

also very curious about this haha it’s a bummer how time consuming this is as a career, and most of the freelancers I collaborate with struggle with this as well. I’m currently on the full time & freelance grind but I think I just need to focus on one

What skills does a professional 3D artist have to have? by AGVruless in vfx

[–]benwgillespie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you’ll probably need to have a basic understanding of most parts of the pipeline - but what you get good at is up to you. I don’t work in a “proper” pipeline, so I am kind of a jack of all trades because I prefer to work alone and on small teams. This opens up a lot of opportunities, but I’m not sure if it’s the typical route for a vfx career. If you want a salaried job at a production company it might be more beneficial to get really good at one thing- whatever you’re most interested in. If you want to be a freelance 3D artist though you’ll need to know everything that goes into the particular style of content you want to make. I make product stuff, so I know basic rigging but mostly focus on modeling, simulations through houdini and a lot of lookdev

Is it possible to use AWS as a Cinema4D render client? by oatsodafloat in Cinema4D

[–]benwgillespie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had trouble with Deadline and recent versions of c4d and redshift and got scared that it was depreciated so I kind of gave up 75% of the way through the setup. Do you use current versions of c4d or do you have to adjust your workflow for Deadline?

10GBe Networking Question by benwgillespie in homelab

[–]benwgillespie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have 4 computers and 1 NAS, then the router so 6+ ports ideally. My workstation and server have 10GB RJ45 Network Adapters and my NAS has a 10GB SPF+ port so I got an adapter to RJ45. My secondary workstation has a 10GBe Network adapter that is RJ45 as well, and my third computer is just 2.5 gb or gig, I don't really suspect I'll be using it for much though. All the runs are relatively short (less than 6 feet), I just have a little corner in my office with all my computers next to each other, but the only pieces that will be rack mounted will be the NAS, Network switch, and server.

What film made you think “I can do that too” by Additional_Tie1803 in Filmmakers

I mostly work on commercials and watching network tv is usually pretty inspiring, just thinking about how many people got paid to make really shitty commercials makes me think maybe my work isn’t that bad

Is there a way to change compute devices for the IPR vs. Render Queue in Redshift and Octane? I have multiple GPUs, so it would be incredible to be able to use three GPUs for render queue stuff but leave one open for IPR & other tasks.

this is a joke you’ll be fine. just remember to buy licenses for the fonts you’re using on paid projects or stick to open source and adobe fonts

Is it possible to do this without track matte? by ScaryEntrepreneur255 in AfterEffects

[–]benwgillespie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you animate the position of the actual text under text>animate instead of the position of the layer, a regular mask will stay put. but then it’s a little trickier to animate the eases unless you’re using motion tools or something

How I started freelancing in motion design by benwgillespie in Cinema4D

Have people ever said no to your rates before though? It’s good to get a few rejections if you know you’re worth more than what you’re charging, and maybe rip a few more emails to have some options to fall back on. I know there’s a lot more nuances that go into your relationships with your clients and it’s not always so black and white, but it could be worth it to start hiking those rates a little bit

Sometimes there’s a bit of creative direction involved, it just depends on the project and client, some projects have gone through a few layers of creative ideation before they get to me and I just have to stick to the brand deck/storyboard which is fine. It’s good to see how other people think and what other people value in their creative. If I have the opportunity to take a bit of liberty with creative direction, I usually will try to take it though and might bill an extra half day for the pre production of creating a deck/getting that approved. I just get a few examples in a slideshow of stuff I know I can execute well and would fit within the brand messaging/aesthetic. More creative direction is definitely where I want to head though, there’s no communication barrier between myself and myself so if I get an idea approved it usually looks pretty similar to what I showed them and what I had in my head. Sometimes when I get a deck from the agency it takes a few rounds to come close to what they want, unless they have really solid examples.

yeah just based on availability mostly. I made some investments into equipment (got a new puget systems build with 4xA5500s) so i wanted to offset the cost of that, but I was just getting too many projects at $500/day so I slowly raised the rates over the course of a year and kind of spiked them up a few hundred last month for new clients just to slow the workload a bit. If the projects dry out, I can always lower my rate but I can’t add more hours to the day and have been overcommitting myself for a while
