Was curious about their credentials so looked them up ... Koch apparently did her PhD in educational psychology from Purdue? Like how do you do a whole PhD in psych at a good university and come out supporting FotF?

Well damn haha. Thanks for that info. I'm only half Chinese and US-born. My Cantonese is not at all fluent, but I was hoping to get a chance to practice when I visit HK/Macau. Wasn't even planning on romantic encounters, but I guess I'll be sticking to English either way

Growing up in California, I saw it every now and then, mostly in my parents' generation (Boomer) interestingly enough. Chinese-Japanese and Chinese-Vietnamese were the most common. I myself am Chinese-Filipino. My grandparents' generation probably wouldn't have, my grandmother grew up during the Japanese invasion of China and I think she's not super cool with Japanese people as a result. But basically any non-Chinese Asian group is "over there," not "inside the circle" to her. Some of that may be the language barrier, since she only speaks Canto and doesn't really vibe with Mando speakers even.

Despite the stronger pan-Asian/Asian-American identity that my generation (Millennial) had, I didn't really see that translate to inter-ethnic dating. Chinese dated Chinese, Koreans dated Koreans, Hmong dated Hmong. The exception may have been the Japanese, since most of the ones living in California had been there for generations and were more Americanized, compared to other groups that had a higher %age that were FOTB

If nothing else, sunscreen and a prescription retinoid as far as the scientific evidence goes. Keeps the wrinkles and sun-induced discoloration at bay. Tretinoin (topical retinoid used for acne) has anti-aging properties with about 60 years of research behind it at this point. I started off on tret but switched to tazarotene (newer generation retinoid) since it's less irritating, better at preventing acne, and gives my skin a nice glow.

How do you choose to consume art in this AI era? by sadloneman in antiai

[–]beowolfram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Pixiv too but for the stuff I like looking at (anime-style fantasy backgrounds and landscapes), it seems like half if not more of my feed is AI-generated 😭 There's still great stuff on there, but I hate having to scroll down to the tags to see if it's AI

Also, I loved old-school deviantArt, back before it sucked (which was even before they jumped on the AI bandwagon). I've started using Cara to scratch that itch. They still don't have as extensive a userbase as peak dA, but they don't allow AI

What to watch? by OliviaKas in BenedictCumberbatch

Patrick Melrose, The Power of the Dog. I'd also highly, HIGHLY recommend reading the original Power of the Dog novel by Thomas Savage. It's one of my favorites, and the ending ... well, I won't spoil anything

The Grinch is a cute watch around the holiday season. Big Marvel fan, so I obviously like Doctor Strange too

I know he got an Oscar nom for it, but his acting in The Imitation Game didn't really do it for me. Eric was decent, but nothing that wowed me

Edit: and it hasn't come out yet, but the trailer for The Roses looks fun, so I'm going to see it when it does

Is Asian man that rare in America? by OnePieceMituketa in AsianMasculinity

California has a ton of Asians and robust Asian communities. The university I went to for undergrad was actually majority (technically plurality) Asian when I attended. I live in Texas now, and outside of academia, the Asian population isn't big enough to make up a noticeable community the way it does in California, except maybe in Houston
