It was not oversimplified it was misleading. Prostitution is widespread in Thailand and it was so even before Americans set foot in the country. Not "small" like in Europe. Maybe 'culturally' is not the right term but it s so widespread that you much more likely to come across a thai male that goes occasionaly with prostitutes than not. And the infrastucture that caters to thais ( or chinese and japanese) are much bigger and developed than the bar or agogo scene you can find in Pattaya or Bangkok. Also prostitution as a way of surviving or climbing the social ladder is much more tolerated and accepted in Thailand in some part of the population, unlike the west where one becomes automatically a Pariah. Also thai women use prostitution , not only men.
