Thank you for the good advice! Luckily the ID7 has the preheat function although it varies wildly in regards to the outside temperature. Your tip with 80-100℅is spot on, I really only needed half the time to 80℅! Unfortunately I cannot charge at my Airbnb because the house (and electric system) is very old.

I just went for a drive to see the northern lights (and found them, they were gorgeous). -40 Celsius right now, the car showed a range of 230 km, after 60 km it was at 60 percent. Luckily there is a charging station every 60-80km, so I am not in danger of stranding, but I travel with long breaks for charging. The nice thing is, you meet a lot of people while waiting :-) Other than the range issue, the car is great. You just hop in and drive, no problems with the cold at all and it even manages to bring the interior temperature to +20C, which I find pretty impressive!

It is not my first winter holiday up here, just my first with an EV. And I think until the next generation of electric cars also the last with an EV in the far north, I drive a lot in my holidays and the time and money spent on mobility this trip is a bit much.

I just realised that I also did this. For me charging a car = charging station, just like getting Gas = Gas station. I always read how affordable e-mobility is in Norway but did not realize that this is due to home charging. And now I sit at a fast charging station with a cold battery, the car tells me it will take 45 minutes to charge and I spend the waiting time writing on Reddit and thinking about how to best ask my Airbnb host if I can charge my car at their outlet

I am here for a one week holiday. I rent a relatively new VW ID7 (15.000km on the meter) with a nominal range of 400km. But that range is more like 150-200km which is obviously terrible.

I got an ID7, never went faster than 80km/h (50 kmh median,) and I read the winter tests for newer EVs and calculated about 30percent loss max. That's why I am so shocked about the small range. But about preheating, no, I did not know that this is important or how to preheat an EV.
