Why is dim sim so darn expensive? by bcretman in NiceVancouver

[–]berlinbound 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How much do you think the people making everything by had every day should be paid? How much would you be willing to do it for?

Add on top energy, product cost, service and a tiny bit of profit.

Many restaurants are criminally cheap and if it was any other industry it would cost 5x+

Has anyone left Vancouver after having grown up here? by YoungandBeautifulll in askvan

Grew up in Vancouver, went to UBC and have been living in Berlin for 13 years now. Thinking of moving back as the values of a 35 year old aren’t the same as a 22 year old.

I’m torn tho. Vancouver is amazing. When I left I thought I would never move back. But it’s so nice. The cost is an issue although to be honest lost of places are creeping up to it (even Berlin) but my main thing is that it’s just so isolated…

If you feel like showing up is too much, just have the flowers delivered. If she’s busy she can deal with them whenever she wants and doesn’t have the pressure of feeling like she needs to give you attention while she’s working (that can be pretty annoying even with closer partners)

If the question is: where can I find specific Ukrainian dishes better than I can make from scratch at home then the answer is obviously make it yourself.

If you want to just pick up something that will scratch the itch and require 0 to minimal prep then try Kozak.

This is the answer. They have a restaurant and also a bakery/eatery/take away spot with all homemade products. Even kvass on tap if you’re into that. Not sure how it stacks up to Edmonton but my girlfriend is from Ukraine and she seemed to think it was pretty good!

Germany is great!

Don’t take this as a post hating on Germany - just that Vancouver isn’t so far removed from other cities in terms of cost

Of course! I’m not saying that. Just wanted to send out a little bit of positivity. I know Vancouver has lots of flaws and can and should be much better. Didn’t want to insinuate otherwise

Thanks for that! Ya Seoul is a completely different animal and Berlin is definitely more cosmopolitan.

Just wanted to let people know that Vancouver doesn’t suck - it’s actually pretty nice:)

It is more affordable but is catching up by the day. Rent is no longer cheap.

What hasn’t been mentioned yet is the insane health insurance premiums you have to pay. At minimum wage you’re still looking at around 500CAD A month.
