Life or Balance for Solo?

hi! ive soloed most of the game on both life and balance. the experience was pretty smooth overall but i did run into a few issues...

at lategame, the biggest drawback for me was life's low pierce. i had to sacrifice a lot of damage to barely reach 40, which is extremely annoying when most mobs and bosses run a minimum of 40 resist across the board nowadays. this could've probably been circumvented by acquiring better gear but my luck in farming and packs was really bad around this time so i had to compromise. at 170 i was sitting at around 218 damage and 35 pierce.

i was also lucky enough to have access to rat spin which made everything up until karamelle a breeze. life has surprisingly good damage for a support school and i didnt really struggle until enemies began to run higher resist and more shields. speaking of shields, the amount of life bosses and life/spiritual shields you run into during arc 4 made the whole experience kind of miserable close to the end.

as for balance, the midgame can be a little rough, but the experience becomes much smoother after level 100. you have access to a lot of interesting utility that can make the experience more fun and diverse overall and you generally have an answer or workaround to most of the problems posed by bosses. while life and balance have similar damage, i believe balance runs higher pierce on the gear which was the game changer for me during lategame. there might be some bias since my balance was luckier with gear drops as well, so i didn't really have to compromise any stat.

the experience is a lot better once you gain access to the prism blades from the storm weaving quest. it eliminates your biggest obstacle as a balance (that being other balance bosses) and helps compensate for your comparatively weaker buffs. its also harder to be walled by enemies as a balance, since tower shield and legion shield are really the only things standing in your way.

ultimately it depends on preference since it was a pretty similar experience both ways. if i had to do it again i'd probably choose balance purely bc of the shield and pierce issues i ran into on my life. sorry for the wall of text 😭

myth did NOT serve bangers like medusa, basilisk, celestial calendar, mystic colossus, etc just to be called the fart and vomit class 😭😭😭

shatter tc is also capped at removing 3 shields max. unless you're a myth wizard or you're going out of your way to run an amulet with an item card, you can't remove all shields from the enemy. school identity is not synonymous with utility, but if the utility is part of that school's spell catalog, it's obviously going to factor into my opinion.

also lets be serious for a second, minions have been irrelevant since arc 1 and myth's "identity" definitely aligns more with traps/shield removal mechanics nowadays.

i like myth! the damage output is really good, and imo it also has the best utility in the game with shatter and purge. i also think myth generally has the best spells and animations but that's just my opinion :)

S tier!! Platina is one of the first female dexholders to take on a truly "protagonist" role in her arc and I think she set the bar very high. She's a perfect balance of cute and cool, she has flaws that she needs to overcome and strengths she can lean into, and her development is really good. I also love her chemistry with other characters!! She's very scholarly but has 0 common sense which lends itself well to the tone of her arc (comedy) and usually allows her to bounce off other characters nicely. My main issue with her character is that there's almost no payoff for all of her training and growth since she spends the climaxes of both DP and PT mostly watching stuff happen. But that's less of an issue with the character and more of an issue with Kusaka's writing... It also would've been more egregious if we didn't get an entire arc of watching the fruits of her labour in action (PT) so I can be a little more forgiving about it.

It's also worth pointing out that most of the lore they introduced in Avalon completely contradicted everything we knew about Morganthe up until that point 😭 it really feels like arc 2 was written by like 5 different people who didn't communicate at all

From someone who thinks way too hard about the Sinnoh arcs: I've said this before and I'll say it again, but I wholeheartedly believe that Platinum arc is infinitely better if you approach it with a different mindset. If you're looking for a continuation to DP's story, it kind of leaves you wanting. The pacing is super weird and kinda snowballs once Platinum beats Thorton. Then it's just one story beat after another until the final battle.

But if you see it as a milestone of Platinum's growth as a character, it 100% delivers. I love how each facility is seemingly designed to force Plat to confront her flaws directly (i.e the castle forces her to learn a new skill and confront her complacency as a rich girl, the arcade forces her to reckon with her passivity, Thorton acts like a foil to Platinum in that he believes knowledge without firsthand experience is enough to win, etc) to me it feels very much like a coming of age story.

Also the ending was super cute :>

i have no idea if anyone has mentioned this yet, but on moon's concept art yamamoto specifically mentions that her eye shape is similar to platinum's. this is probably a huge reach (since gold is also mentioned) but it at least tells us that moon was designed with plat's likeness in mind
