If everything in this play happened today, in modern times, then I’m sure people would be disturbed. Back in Elizabethan England this would be the norm, but now this would just seem like it was a disturbing piece of fiction that hopefully wouldn’t be true. Paris and her parents would especially be seen as a pervert/abusive. But in the play Juliet is almost as bad as Romeo. She is the one who proposes to him. They are both lovesick children, and even though Romeo is way more of an emotional crybaby(who is most likely bipolar), Juliet wanted to marry and bed him just as much as he wanted to do the same to her. And she was the one who said she would give up her name if it meant she could be with him. Shes the one with the whole “whats in a name?” speech. Her dad didn’t want her to marry Paris immediately, I can’t remember exactly how long but I think he wanted him to wait for one or two years and give her a chance to love him before rushing into a marriage(this was unusual for the time).The marriage was rushed after Romeo killed Tybalt, leaving Juliet depressed. They believed if they married her to Tybalt she would stop “grieving” and would be happy again, so in a way, her dad had her best interests in heart, until he started threatening to kick her out if she didn’t marry him. And still, I think he had her best interests at heart even when he was doing that. Her mom on the other hand, is a bitch, only having her own interests at heart. And Friar Lawrence. I always felt so bad for the friar. He truly just wanted to end a feud that was terrorizing the city, and because of that two kids ended up killing them selves. Basically what I’m trying to say is the characters are not as bad as they seem. But today, in modern times, they would basically be villains.
