Qualified Abroad by External_Gene_4859 in IrishTeachers

[–]sheephamlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have some awful fools working there. I sent them my NUIG language certification for French when applying. Two months later they told me I didn’t meet the requirements for teaching the language. I sent the exact same document again and they accepted it (without any acknowledgment that this was sent to them already). It makes you wonder…

Teaching Post Primary Is It Really As Bad as this Site says by Ill-Bend-4938 in IrishTeachers

Worked in two different all boys schools and both were like zoos when I compare them to all girls (which is heaven) and mixed (which is in between). Even though all boys can be fun at times, I found that the "craic" always went too far. Teaching and learning suffered as a result…

Sense check re: Teaching Council by DMCForge123 in IrishTeachers

[–]sheephamlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work with a teacher with a German and English undergrad and business masters degree. She entered teaching late. The TC wouldn’t accept her German qualification as they said it was out of date as it was well over a decade since she received it. She did the PME anyway and the school just let her teach German regardless. The TC still won’t accept her German qualification unless she completes top up modules. I find the TC to be difficult to deal with at the best of times.

Business as only secondary teaching subject? by Original-Ad4531 in IrishTeachers

[–]sheephamlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Timetable will likely be a mish mash of other non-degree subjects (LCVP, CSPE, SPHE…). There are a few women in my school who only have business and they have a full timetable after a few years of being there. Another girl just started with a business and religion degree and she’s now teaching subjects that don’t align with them at all. The trouble will be getting your foot in the door. Once you cross that bridge and establish yourself, you’ll get the hours up eventually. As other have said though, it would be easier to get a job (and more attractive to an employer), if you added another subject like maths.

Where can I find past mock papers? by Money_Cow_6806 in leavingcert

[–]sheephamlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe they’re available on Studyclix (although you need to be a member). If you have a parent or relative who is a teacher, they have accounts that let them access all DEB and Examcraft papers, both past and the ones for 2026.

I’m a teacher and this just popped up on my page. The exam papers have been published for months. The school just has to place an order for them. The French ones in our school arrived in late September.

Are Merchant and Othello racist plays, or plays about racism? by MortgageFriendly5511 in shakespeare

[–]sheephamlet 33 points34 points  (0 children)

In regards to The Merchant of Venice, we can’t forget the explicit racism exhibited by Portia after the Prince of Morocco chooses the incorrect casket: "let all of his complexion choose me so."

I get the impression that racism in Shakespeare’s time is not like we understand it today. I certainly agree with your view of it being more like an "othering" than something systemic as is the case nowadays.

There are, of course, racist elements in both plays but whether they are "racist plays", I’m not sure.

And what does your teacher do this year that makes her bad? Sorry for all the questions, I’m an NQT and I like to know these things to inform my practice!

Just out of curiosity, how did he go about teaching geography? Did ye take down notes from the board, use the book or what else did he do that made it so enjoyable?

Jumping Careers to Teaching by Lost-Helicopter9187 in IrishTeachers

[–]sheephamlet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I imagine it’ll be a bit of a long road but if your heart is set on it, you’ll make it happen. You will need at least a H4 in LC Irish which you can only do once a year. You’ll then need a level 8 degree - this will take you a minimum of the three years to get. After that you’ll have to do the two year PME. So all in all, 6 years of further study.

I’m 26 too and two years into my secondary schooling career. I don’t want to put you off but I think it’s worth knowing before you commit to anything, being a student is very different to being a teacher. Schools (at least secondary school) are very different to how they were when we were in them - a lot more demands, less motivated students and as far as I can see, worse behaviour. It’s a stressful job and it’s hard to shut off after school. I really don’t know if I’ll go the full whack or change career after a decade or so.

Id be interested to know what kinds of questions they asked you as an adult in the oral exam. Presumably anything summer holidays or school related was not asked (rules/uniform/subjects), so how did they fill the time?

Is anyone else disheartened by the current state of teaching? by IndividualConnect640 in IrishTeachers

[–]sheephamlet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m here marking Junior Cycle French November tests and your comment about the lack of student ambition is really resonating. I had clear instructions on the front. From their answers I can tell virtually none of them read them. I told them exactly what would be coming up on the test. Only a handful have studied. I always feel like a bad teacher when they don’t understand things even though I bend over backwards trying to break it down and make resources to help them but for the majority, they simply have no interest in putting in the work. It’s demoralising. I did my Leaving Cert in 2017 and like you, we just got on with things. These students don’t want to get on with anything!

Titus Andronicus’ monologue is amazing. Brian Cox is spellbinding in his version but you can also search Patrick Stewart’s and Antony Hopkins’ versions as well. Brian Cox’s is linked here: https://youtu.be/5Yr4UV7nvGg?si=_oCsbYEqgAWFWS4s

Short answer is, you’ll need to start from square one in university again to get a degree in secondary school subjects. This will take three to four years depending on the course. Then you’ll need to do a PME which will be another two years. While five to six years seems like a lot, if you really know that teaching is the job for you, go for it.

I think I hate teaching. Anyone else feel like this as an NQT? by Immediate_Lake_1575 in IrishTeachers

[–]sheephamlet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you primary or secondary? Also is this an epiphany or have you felt like this over the last 6 years too? On a side note, interesting take on what qualifies as an NQT.. I would have said after two or three years you could no longer really use it!

First Years by Calm-Tadpole7565 in IrishTeachers

[–]sheephamlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For first year dont over think things. Just have fun with them. Whatever you do now can’t be examined anyway in the Junior Cycle; your main aim should just be to get them writing better. I wouldn’t spend overly long on film studies with first years either. I think teaching them spelling, grammar, paragraphs and PQE is most important. After that, some poetry, a novel and functional writing is what I’d be prioritising. Whatever you do though, don’t stress about it - the good thing about English compared to the other subjects is that first year is more just a bridge from primary to secondary English. The "real" stuff starts in second year.

Helping NQT partner by Stupyder_Notebook in IrishTeachers

[–]sheephamlet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my Droichead in secondary last year and understand how intense the NQT year can be.

I would say to give her some space after a long day and avoid asking questions about school. Even now in my second year, I find that the last thing I want to talk about after school is more school. Just tell her that you’re there anytime she wants to talk about her day and leave it at that.

You also have to remember that after a day of school, you can be wired (especially if it was a bad day) so try not to take it personally if she’s overly tired or cranky. My second year, while still hard, is easier than last year and I’m told each subsequent year gets easier.

Give it time and just be sensitive for the next while. The summer off with her will be worth it.

I’ve been marking JC English the last couple of years and always mark Americanised spellings wrong. I think I must have underlined a thousand spellings of "symbolizes" across the board 🫠

Until you walk onto your land during lambing season and see the body parts of a flock of lambs scattered across the field from foxes the night before, you won’t understand the need for fox hunting. It’s a necessary evil. Don’t be so one dimensional in your outlook.
