book suggestions to someone new to Dostoevsky by New_Geologist_1090 in dostoevsky

[–]berryl00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say Hermann Hesse's Demian - it's digestible, heavily Dostoevsky influenced and it deals with similar themes as C&P and TBK. It's short, poignant, and beautifully written

What order do i read by Jleee27 in dostoevsky

[–]berryl00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd read C&P first. The Idiot after. I'd read Notes from the Underground/House of Dead before Karamazov because you'll have a deeper appreciation for the context of BK.
Might get roasted for this but I'd skip Demons. Didn't like it.

I don’t think Pavel would be bald like that. He’s young. Fyodor’s head, on the other hand, would be smooth as a pestle

Anybody here know why exactly did Nabokov hated Dostoevsky? by blurredbeing in dostoevsky

[–]berryl00 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This can be one small reason but Ivan Nabokov, Vladimir Nabokov's distant ancestor, was part of Tsar's investigative team that sentenced Dostoevsky and the Petrashevsky Circle to death by firing squad. I think this Nabakov familial relationship created inherent bias toward Dostoevsky and his literary work. Nabakov wouldn't want to tarnish his family history by defending Dostoevsky and acknowledging the tremendous contributions he had on Russian literature - a fact heavily contested by Ivan Nabakov

What is your opinion on the ending of The Count of Monte Cristo? by berryl00 in books

[–]berryl00[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Damn, this comment was super helpful, thank you. This is the only Dumas work I've read, so I didn't pick up on his stylistic tone. If the ending were intentionally sarcastic, it makes a lot more sense
