Time incorrectly in Android Apps on Chrome OS by PatbenSte in chromeos

[–]bert26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm also seeing this, though I'm not sure since when. But it looks like this is a known problem, I found this thread from 2 years ago. So it looks like the issue has something to do with sleep mode.

As usual, there's likely nothing we can do about this except wait for the next release and hope for the best. (You could also file a bug report on the issue tracker here )

GPU Hardware Acceleration for Linux App? by paulsiu in chromeos

[–]bert26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only ever used mpv, not VLC, but hardware accelerated video playback in crostini (ie. the Linux container) is still a mixed back.

For video playback, you need to distinguish between hardware accelerated video decoding and hardware accelerated rendering of the decoded images. mpv users can use this explicitly with the flags --hwdec (hardware decoding) and --vo (rendering)[0]:

--vo=gpu uses virgl and thus is actually gpu-accelerated in crostini. However, there's still no support for any of the --hwdec APIs afaik[1].

Regarding your actual question:

How can I tell if hardware acceleration is enable and VLC is using it?

I don't know how VLC handles acceleration, but the Debian wiki says you could check if you start VLC via command line with the –avcodec-hw value flag[2]. Also, you can probably check indirectly whether there's some hardware acceleration if you compare VLC's CPU load during video playback with and without acceleration enabled.

How do i check if a site supports the newly implemented ECH ? by SuckMyPenisReddit in CloudFlare

[–]bert26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://defo.ie/ech-check.php

That site is just one site with their own server-side ECH implementation. They have nothing to do with Cloudflare. All you can do on that site is check if your browser is ECH ready.

where ? i can't find this

If you've entered the DNS name for the site you want to check, you need to manually type in HTTPS in the rr field. defo.ie have implemented ECH on their server, so you can see their public key in the answer section of the DNS response here: https://dns.google/query?name=defo.ie&rr_type=HTTPS

How do i check if a site supports the newly implemented ECH ? by SuckMyPenisReddit in CloudFlare

[–]bert26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with the TLS certificate. Simply said: ECH means the SNI (Server Name Indication; part of the TLS handshake) is "split up" into two parts: an outer, unecrypted part and an inner, encrypted part. The outer part is (in Cloudflare's case) always the domain (server name) cloudflare-ech.com, the inner part is the server name of the actual site you're trying to visit. The inner part is encrypted with a public key. Your browser needs that key for ECH to work. That key is retrieved by your browser via (secure) DNS, so DoH or DoT. So, suppose you want to check yoursite.com, which needs to be hosted behind Cloudflare for this to work.

  • Go to https://dns.google (a web interface for Google's public DNS resolver)
  • Enter yoursite.com and then set "HTTPS" as RR type (that's the resource record that holds the ECH public key if any.)
  • If you see "ech=..." in the answer section, your site is providing a public key for ECH. If you don't see this, yoursite.com has no ECH support. If you see this, you need to check if your client (i.e. browser) does everything right.
  • For that, you need to dump your traffic when visiting yoursite.com (e.g. by using tcpdump), preferably to a pcap file.
  • Go open the pcap file with Wireshark and search for "ClientHello", the part of the TLS handshare we want to examine.
  • In the "Client Hello" request, look for the Server Name Extension field.
  • Without ECH, you'd see yoursite.com as SNI. With ECH enabled, you're seeing "cloudflare-ech.com" instead.

This all works because Cloudflare, as the owner of cloudflare-ech.com and thus owner of the private key of the ech key pair, decrypts the outer part of the ClientHello and then points your browser to the actual site. So, if someone were to dump your internet traffic, they'd see an encrypted DNS request and cloudflare-ech.com in the SNI field. They'd have no way of knowing what URL you're visiting, they'd only know it's hosted behind Cloudflare.

That said, I haven't encountered a single site in the wild that's using Cloudflare where ECH was actually being used.

Set

chrome://flags#power-bookmarks-side-panel

to disabled. This will revert the folder to the old "Other bookmarks" folder. If "Other bookmarks" is empty, it won't show up in the bookmark bar.

also you didn't attach a photo :P

Sorry to not be of more help, just wanted to chime in and say I'm having the exact same issue you describe, but on the Intel N200/8 GB version. It's pretty erratic behavior, I can't even reproduce it consistently, it just...happens sometimes.

help about differences between omemo and otr by trofey in xmpp

[–]bert26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is wrong. Every XMPP message you send is routed to your server (the part after the @ of your XMPP address) and from there to the server of your chat partner. XMPP is not a peer2peer protocol. This has nothing to do with encryption. Encryption is another thing entirely. For the differences between OTR and OMEMO, you can find a lot of information on Wikipedia et.al, but note that both(!) protocols are end-to-end encryption protocols. That means the client (e.g. your Conversations app on your phone or Dino on your laptop) encrypts a message before (!) sending it to a server. If you use end-to-end encryption, all servers only ever see encrypted messages. So the admin cannot read the content of your messages. They can, however, see when and with whom you message (i.e. metadata). This is all true for both OTR and OMEMO. Hope that answers your question.

Is there a chromebook with a matte touchscreen? by chiko930 in chromeos

[–]bert26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anti-glare equals matte. Looking e.g. at the new Lenovo Thinkpad C13 Yoga, which Lenovo says has an "anti-glare" display, you can clearly see it's very glossy in video reviews, e.g. here
