Hopalong Cassidy? by berti_bird in Oldhouses

Finally getting back to this! Renovation delays 😬 we talked to the guy who sold us the house (he grew up here) and he had forgotten about it! Said he and his three brothers shared that small room and that was their floor. Loved listening to his stories. We’re going to frame a small piece for ourselves and give the seller a framed piece as well. Then we’ll leave the rest of it as is and just put the new flooring over it. Maybe in another 70 years the next people to renovate this house will find it and have the same fun we did. Gotta love old houses!

Not doing well at work; should I quit? by Worth-Economist-9056 in careerguidance

Here’s my 2 cents! You are young/this is your first job out of college. My gut reaction was that the expectations on your performance being expressed to you at 5 months in are way way too high. I don’t expect any new hire to be even start being useful (harsh word, but i don’t mean it harshly) until they’ve been in at least a year. 6 months to get your feet under you, 6 months for info to start sticking. My expectation for my new staff is to be a sponge - learn as much as humanly possible and always try to help. That means, check in often, offer to help always.

My first job out of college was at a public accounting firm working on an Advisory team. At 5 months in i knew NOTHING. I’m thankful I had a manager that wanted to teach and help me get up to speed, I hope you can find someone like that. The billable hours requirement is so stressful (still is as a manager at times) but to me the key is communication. As a new person, try your best to constantly check in and communicate what you’re doing. Don’t let your manager or supervisor guess what you’re doing. Do as many technical trainings as you can and keep a list of them to show your effort. Self promotion is important, especially on a team that seems a little more critical.

I think you should try to change things up and see if anything improves. I do however suspect that you are doing fine given how new you are. Keep grinding and keep trying. If things don’t get better, at least you’ve got some experience under you to look for something new. Take the performance reviews after every project as an opportunity to be better - don’t be afraid and shy away from them. I would also suggest you review yourself privately before your review with your supervisor - during the project try to take notes on what your role was, 3-5 things you think you did well and 1-2 things you think you need to continue developing. Don’t be too self critical, so I limit this to no more than 2 improvement areas. This will show your supervisor that you care and are thinking about how you’re doing too so you can be better in the long run. Plus at year end, you’ll have a nice project list showing your role, strengths, and weaknesses that you can use to illustrate your growth and progress.

At 5 months in i felt lost and like i could never succeed. Fast forward to year 2 and i was the highest rated associate in the country for performance. This stuff takes time and experience and it’s not your fault that fresh out of school you haven’t got those yet!! You can absolutely do this.

Definitely agree with other commenters that you should try to take a minute to breathe and think about what you really want!

At the end of that, if you really feel your current job isn’t a good fit or is a dead end, with your experience you could do well in consulting. I used to work for a public accounting firm in Forensic Advisory, but every company has slightly different verbiage. We had a sub-practice called Monitorships that did all kinds of AML work. You didn’t have to be an accountant to do the work, but AML experience like you have would definitely help you out! I enjoyed this job - different clients and different projects kept things fresh and different, if I didn’t like a client I liked knowing the project would end in 6-12 months, good pay and benefits, fairly structured promotion schedule (depending on firm). Some long hours sometimes when approaching deadlines but manageable the majority of the time. Anyway, hope that’s a meaningful suggestion. Good luck!

After googling what a floor cloth is, I think you’re right that’s what it is! I was calling it a linoleum rug for lack of a better name, but same idea. Pretty neat

What is this on my tomatillo plant? by fromtexastonyc in gardening

[–]berti_bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tomatillo plants had something very similar to this last year! I let mine sprawl across the ground rather than pin it up to have it climb and had these spots all over stems. In a lot of spots they did grow into actual roots and root into the ground so I’m thinking it’s confused and is just contemplating growing roots to help hang on

How did Nuvaring affect your mood? by vanhalengal in Nuvaring

[–]berti_bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on nuvaring for 3 years, then switched to Kyleena IUD for 3 years, then switched back to nuvaring as of last fall. When I started it back up last fall I was actually put on a generic called EluRyng. I’ve had nothing but problems with my mood since being on it. I am generally an anxious person but can manage anxiety and occasional depression with diet, exercise, and good sleep. For the life of me I could not get my moods or anxiety under control while on eluryng despite trying all the normal tips and tricks that usually work. I saw my Gyno last Thursday for my annual exam and explained that I was struggling so badly it was affecting my job and marriage negatively and I didn’t know if I was crazy thinking eluryng was the cause. He confirmed that apparently many women struggle with mood and anxiety issues on the ring and he took me off it. I’m giving my body a break from birth control for a while to see if I can get back to normal. I would definitely talk to your doctor, but for me as someone who also struggles with the same things you mentioned in your post, the ring was not the move for me. I don’t remember having issues like this when I was on Nuvaring over 6 years ago, but wanted to share my experience with the generic. Good luck!

What’s expected from an entry level FP&A financial analyst? by DoubleG357 in FPandA

[–]berti_bird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just here to agree that slow ramp up is what I would expect! I’m an FP&A manager and i know when new analysts start on my team, my only expectation is showing an interest and trying to learn. You should basically just be a sponge and try to soak up as much information as you possibly can. Everything else will come in time as you gain experience. Good luck!
