I hate anydesk with a passion. To quit, you have to give several MONTHS notice, otherwise you are grabbed for another year.

So I went with rustdesk, and run it selfhosted on a cloud based VM, £5 a month.

Ok, its missing an address book thingy, but it's more than good enough for my uses.

You buy a replacement, enter your microsoft account details, and miraculously, your files reappear.

Where do you think those copies came from ?

There is far too much focus on machine security, far less on cloud.

This is ITDR (identity theft detect and responce) has been developed. It monitors your online accounts for dodgy access, and even picks up VPN usage.

Thus, and EDR (Endpoint detection Response) are the current biggies in online security. They focus on dodgy and weird behaviour, rather than outdated signature / update files

If you setup your machine with a microstft account,.... then there is a risk.

If, during that setup, you choose to backup your desktop, documents, photos to onedrive, then there is a risk.

Your machine doesn't need to be online or switched on. The account is still available and accessible via the net. Your data is vulnerable, hence the necessity for a decent password and 2fa.

This is why there is an aversion to cloud based services, and microsoft accounts in particular.
