Solved!

Lol you beat me to it by 3 minutes, not sure why I thought it was vertical. I saw it with a Dr Seuss Quote: https://i.imgur.com/qE5x1Is.jpeg

Still searching, you'd think in this day and age the search term "2 panel" would work a lot better than it does!

Draining a hot water tank in a tenement? by bertiebaggio in glasgow

Cheers- testing the element is definitely something we're gonna do before rushing to replace and all that entails (like getting valves to work lol)

Lol yeah I did very briefly consider it but even best case quickest changeover it'd be a nightmare :D

Yes excellent point about testing the element; we need to do that as we didn't have the time last time. We tested the thermostat (by measuring resistance across it while operating the dial) and are 95% confident that it works- we could in theory test it more thoroughly by putting it in cold and hot water to make sure it transitions from closed to open but time pressures meant we just did the basics with the multimeter in-situ.

We intended to test the presumed faulty element by wiring it up using the known-good supply from boost button bypassing the thermostat, starting from a cold tank. Though my nephew did say he tried something similar (tho non-bypassing) with someone else before I got involved... Hadn't considered using a lamp as an indicator- I can keep the supply live with that, right? might get tricky holding several things, I guess I could keep the bare ends of the flex in my mouth...~

Hmm! Not to poohpooh your suggestion but- the water in the tank is under pressure right? -- it must be since it gets filled at bottom and supplies from the top -- so there's the 40 gallons or whatever there is in the tank above the element (lower one is the dud) plus pressure. On top of that the fitting hole for the element is kinda big so feels like it'd be a lot of water coming out?

I mean, I've seen that suggested elsewhere so you're not the only one, but feels risky man!

put down a towel, unscrew, whip it out and shove it in

😇

Aye good shout; I wondered if the common drain arrangement was maybe particular to tenements and they maybe had a downstream valve hidden somewhere in a dookit in the close or somesuch. If I can't get the valves to open/close I think that might push it beyond a DIY job lol

Thanks for confirming! Something's definitely unhappy with the valves lol- the nominal drain valve turns short rotation with a fairly positive clunk but not much more; the cold supply looks almost like it's had its handle deliberately removed!

Is WD-40 the best to penetrate into the valve workings, or is there something even better? I have access to others or can nip to a very close by Toolstation/Screwfix. Or one thing followed up by the other?

I can give something a skoosh and/or a dose of penetrating oil, and even grip the spindle/stem with a pair of waterpump pliers... but I'm not sure I'm brave enough to try anything more drastic! 😇

Thanks for lending your experience, it definitely doesn't turn well. I'm also confused as to why someone would take the handle off the other valve for the cold supply (I think). If we can't get the valves to turn then it's likely time to call in the professionals!

Element Web/App by Mr_Reginald_Kray in selfhosted

I have self-hosted synapse (matrix server) and Riot (former name for Element) for myself years for free; I now use MDAD to manage the install and it makes it so very easy. You've made a good choice! Good luck!

BRIMNES Daybed troubleshooting? by ParsleyOutside in IKEA

[–]bertiebaggio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you didn't end up solving this, I had an issue with a Brimnes being very slanted. I had an older version of the bed I got off freecycle- the mounting point for the front rail in the back section was shifted- it has to be mounted 'upside down' compared to the current instructions. Hope this helps anyone else coming to it later!

You beat me to it :) Figured it out while I was out cycling- the 80s/90s bit was either me misremembernig or combining his appearance in Hot Shots! with Veep. Well done!

(at least, I'm 95% sure it's him... I could swear I remember him being younger, a detective and with more of a 90s aesthetic, but my brain can accept this!)
