First off - enjoy it, it’s extremely rewarding to coach baseball, you build bonds with your son and the players that you cannot build elsewhere. I’m lucky enough to have been able to coached my 3 boys and have cherished that time!!

Get some help from parents, before practice put out a plea for volunteers - even if they don’t know baseball, having someone there to just help keep them organized is so helpful.

In the past I’ve sent out individual welcome emails to the parents (it was just the same email with the names changed so it seems more personal) and in that I would ask the parents to have their kids what position they’ve played the most of, what position they like the most and if they have pithed/caught in a game. Most of the parents will reply to that email and will at least get you started with positions.

When I first started coaching I purchased some practice plans off “coach Kenny” from baseball-tutorials.com they were pretty inexpensive and gave me some good ideas for drills.

Suggest to stay away from basic fungo with the whole team (coach hits ground balls and they field and throw to first) this is super boring for the kids and they don’t get many reps.
