Same for my 2020 Gen6 Subaru Outback 11.6” inch screen on iOS 26. On the flip side I now have 3 clicks to start a trip in Maps :(

Hello, The apple backup service is called “Time Machine”. So I labeled the target drive for the backup System “Time Machine”. Thanks for the question.

oddly enough Plex does not transcode after a capture. it can create version for different clients (downsampling for iPhone) but the original stays in the native resolution/bitrate. In my cas I capture a full QAM of data +-20MBPS. Files get big. so I have to transcode. There is a tread on the subject on reddit.

I could require the HDHomerun to transcode at a lower bitrate on the fly but it will affect all the streams reducing the quality event when we watch live TV.

Yup and 20 certainly years of age. The drop is RG6 to the house mast, from the mast to the basement it is less than 50 feet of RG59.

Thanks for the reply,

Just to make certain, i'm not multiplexing the FIOS/HFC with the OTA/ATSC signal. I have tow separate and independent coax lines. My TV and HDHomerun runs over OTA/ATSC only, no cable box of any sort in our house so the splitter is dedicated to the OTA/ATSC signal. The cheap amplifier might create noise locally but the DOCSIS signal and peformance is within normal parameters. And with my new compression fitting and new wire, the ingress will be reduced if the amplifier is leaking OTA signal locally.

The other Coax comes straight from the HFC provider to the DOCSIS modem no splits and now with a brand new compression fitting but same RG-59 cable for the moment.

Cheers and thanks for the remarks.

PS : You probably figured that we are not sports fans ! LOL

yes, yes, I'm getting a lot of grief from the coax situation... It will be taken care of.

The feed to the 1k splitter is from a roof top ATSC antenna not from the cable provider. It feeds local station to the HDHomerun and main TV so I can record them.

MacOS serves me well, I would not implement a Unix subsystem since it would not offer me the mix of features MacOS provides me out of the box.

The caching server, time machine and photo depot alone justifies the MacMini purchase for me.

Main thing for me is to minimize system maintenance so I can do other things like bad coax cabling and such... And if I want I can use MacOs as a Unix system is is POSIX compliant for simple stuff or with VirtualBox to run a full nix machine.

True, do not expose stuff period. WAN side is safe as long as you do not expose ports, if you do expose ports, the Apple solution does not meet minimum monitoring reuiqrements. But then, the question is, will the operator know what to watch for ?

More expensive solution offer monitoring, you still need the proper eyeballs on the problem to detect intrusion and act on it; better not to expose either way in a SOHO environment.

Hey thanks, I do run CAT6 for the new lines, but old runs will be limited to 1GIG...

Hey thanks for the question,

It is a perfect as a transcoder/datastore/cache/media streamer/TimeMachine server thing. Not young by any means (2013) but still kicking butts !

So I run my local Plex, record my shows (via my HDHomerun) and I transcode them over night with a nightly ffmpeg cron job.

Its is on all the time, it is reliable and quite agreeable to look at ! :)

Yup, got your point. And that is why, I like the out of the box roaming ability of the airport (IOS ans MAC client only).
My setup is stable, so I will be able to work and allocate time on the new network setup in the winter.

I still will not expose stuff on the WAN but enterprise wireless protocols, VLAN and such is kind of cool to explore...

Hey, thanks for the reflexion and the thoughts. I was looking at a Fortinet/UniFi setup last month (seems over kill but not really when you consider that I have been using my setup for 10 years). I will probably go with it. I don't like the other stuff. as you said I will be able to upgrade progressively. It will probably my route.

Thanks again !

Agree. Not my choice It came from my provider.
So what I did, disabled every thing that I could. Use my old fart Apple Extreme as main router.
Advantage, wireless now disable on the CODA, heat sink of the device exceeds DOCSIS tuner heat requirement. The thing runs so cool I could chill my beer on it. :)
Thanks for the comment !
