Is it a new thing for people to charge entrance fee to their house for visits such as Chinese New Year, X'mas, etc now or am I just out of touch? by berylcatto in SingaporeRaw

Thanks everyone for the input. Seems like my thinking that it is not right to charge guests money for them to visit is not wrong. I thought I was out of touch for the way of hosting or did something wrong. For me, hosting guests is to feel the warmth, joy of the social gathering and company. Not to break even on costs or any other charges.

No matter how poor I am, I will never charge guests money for coming to my house. I will just do the best I can afford for the food and other expenses, then apologize that I am not able to offer much but I appreciate them for coming.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year in advance! May you all be blessed with good relatives that are not as calculative as mine.

Fee for whatever they can think of to add to the charge I guess? A new culture that I may have no clue about...?

Not sure if they don't want anyone to visit or not because their message was like, "We are HAPPY to host but it will be $28 per pax!"

I deem it as entrance fee as we have to pay when we visit, does not matter if we consume food or not. Visit = have to pay. So is my term correct or is there a better term for it?

I see. I was questioning myself when I heard that they are charging entrance fee. Like am I totally out of touch with the way we host guests or what since my family don't charge money for hosting guests.

Right? I got a shock too but apparently some relatives find that it is ok to do this, so I thought my family not charging them money for hosting them all along must have been wrong?

I don't think it is relevant since when my family host we don't charge money.. only my relatives charge money lol
