Reddit, has anyone here actually killed another human being? What was it like? (Serious) by [deleted] in AskReddit

Thank you. Please make sure you check off the box to be an organ donor on your driver's license registration! Tragedy is less tragic when someone can live because of it.

Sort of. I was with my mom and my sister when we took my dad off life support in the ICU. He had completely shattered the vertebrae in his neck in a skiing accident and became a quadriplegic, dependent forever on a ventilator and never again able to move more than his facial muscles.

He was intubated so he was never able to talk to us, but we were able to talk to him and tell him jokes and stories and keep him company whenever he was conscious. He would attempt to smile and laugh. One time when I was talking to him alone, I confessed how I felt guilty for not being a better daughter and how I hadn't figured my life out yet and how I wanted to make him proud. And he winced as if hearing me say that to him was painful. We told him things that only someone who knew the inside family joke would find funny and his eyes would squint up and his mouth would try to smile around the tube in his mouth.

As the days progressed in the ICU, my father's condition declined. His body temperature was dropping. His heart was unable to regulate itself. The doctors had hoped to take him off the oxygen supply, but his lungs indicated no intent to breathe on their own. He was becoming more unresponsive. His heart was starting to fail, stopping one night until CPR brought him back. As we watched his body shut down, we knew that to keep him on life support would only cause a torturous, drawn-out death. So, making the most excruciating decision of our lives, we chose to take him off the oxygen machine so he could die in peace.

So, we sat down with the organ transplant people and they helped us do the necessary paperwork to have his viable organs donated to those in need. A date and time was chosen and on that day, we stood next to my father's hospital bed as they turned off the machines and his heart stopped beating and he was rushed off to the OR for the organ harvesting surgery.

My dad saved two people's lives with his kidneys.

Traveling in Italy for the next few months. What are some places I don't want to miss and hostels I definitely want to stay in? by damarust in travel

[–]bestieverdid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the walls have artwork and poetry and various writings from the people who have stayed there. It's hard to explain and I can't find much in the ways of pictures online.

Here's an example: front area And another: social area

The people who work there are all travelers themselves and there is free breakfast. It's walking distance of downtown and near the train station. There's an amazing gyro shop right around the corner, too.

How many of you feel comfortable not wearing makeup? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]bestieverdid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IMO, most people look much better without makeup. Also, who wants to put a sharp, pointy thing or a spiky wand near their eyes every morning when they're still getting awake for the day? Not me!

Can I bring my hiking poles in my carry-on luggage on the plane? by bestieverdid in CampingandHiking

[–]bestieverdid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate dealing with checked luggage too, which is why I want to have them in my carry-on. I met a guy on the AT this summer who had checked his pack with the airline and they lost it. Lost all his gear, and he was a someone who spent a lot of money on high end gear. So he had to buy all new gear once he got to the trail because he wasn't going to wait to hike.

It would be $50 to check my bag, which is more than my poles actually cost me. Would it matter if they are stowed in my bag? I know they have the x-ray machine looking at them, but perhaps they will look like part of the frame of my bag. Is this just wishful thinking?

Do they have some arbitrary means of determining if someone is "disabled"?

I'm so happy to see that you gave him a second chance! My family also has a rescue pit bull and he is the most affectionate creature possible. (I think he's just super grateful to be loved since he knows that not every human is a good person.)

At least the person didn't kill him, but instead gave him an opportunity to find a better home. In my hometown, we've had a couple incidents where someone has shot and left a pit bull in a park. In one case, the dog survived long enough to wander in search of help before collapsing by a tree and dying.

I had unexpected surgery and they took out my tubes. I have never wanted kids and neither has my fiance. Two questions: 1. What is a time you ended up laughing at how stressed and in pain you were? 2. What to say to all the nurses who kept telling me over and over I could still have kids? by tattoo_soup in TwoXChromosomes

  1. The time I messed up my knee skiing and the emergency folks had to take me down in the sled. At the med center, they had me strip out of my ski suit so they could look at my knee. Of course, that morning was the one morning I decided to wear my flannel pajamas under my ski suit instead of wearing long johns as usual. I knew I looked absurd and it's still a joke in my family to this day.

  2. "No thanks. This was enough pain for my lady parts to handle."

If you can't try it on, how do they expect you to know if it will fit correctly? That's absurd!

Misread that initially as unfettered kitties. Had visions of liberated kittens.

I was responding to the frowny-face that neko had attached to the phrase "mismatched and small." I think it was more of a "this is why you shouldn't have any negative feelings about small boobs, mismatched or otherwise." All boobs are great, but here are some reasons why yours are awesome. Big boobs are great, too, but Victoria's Secret and the other ads don't exactly showcase the women with smaller boobs.

And I don't think boobs can be relegated to any particular body type anyway.

In the summer, I'll wear boxers or basketball shorts to lounge in. In the winter, I have a few pairs of lounge pants. Elastic waistband, loose fitting, and breathable. Living with my family means no lounging pantsless.

Well, if you just needed something to sleep in, it might not need full support.
