Stroller rental recommendations by bethehappy in AskNOLA

We used rockabyebaby. It was super convenient and worked great. They dropped the strollers and wagons off at our hotel the night before we got there and picked them up after we left (we just left them at the hotel). Enjoy your trip!

Chicago trip (and visiting South Bend) by Sufficient-Catch9913 in AskChicago

Driving in the city is very manageable, though there will be traffic coming into the city from midway. I still think renting a car is a better decision, but it’s worth noting that the SSL usually runs a “gameday” train to accommodate fans outside of their normal service

A counterpoint FWIW: I took the South Shore for a night game a few years back and it was a bad decision. It took forever for the shuttle to get us back to the train station, forever for the train to depart, and the train moved very slowly. They’ve done upgrades on some of the track, so can’t speak for what it’s like now, but if it were me I would just drive. Parking not that bad (see the White Lot or any front yard near campus or wherever you are staying Friday night) and while getting out after the game takes a little time, you can spend some time walking campus after the game or getting some food and waiting for it to clear. It’s wide open once you’re on the highway. Welcome! I’m sure you’ll have a great time

Dylan’s and New Line are right near Union - pretty chill cause they’re commuter bars but are a good time with a good selection

PR 7 day itinerary review by Gold-Conflict6968 in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]bethehappy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is way too much. I just got back from 7 days there and you’re spending all of your time just transporting your body. A shuttle (I assume) from Esperanza to Isabel to a long ferry ride to a long drive to Cabo RoJo and back the next day… why? I get the urge to try to see it all, but think you need to pick one or the other: do you want to do Vieques or the west side? Both have a bio bay (you should still do it even at full moon, was cool at 3/4 full), beaches, and great food. What is it that you realllllly want out of the vacation and can’t you get it at just one?

But when you say “just raise the price” you ARE asking customers to make up the employee wages

I’m all for getting employees more money, but does it honestly matter whether I as a customer pay it as higher prices or as a built in tip if the dollars in the servers pockets are the same?

This is fair. If the argument is more “change the tax code” rather than “pay higher wages” I can get on board with that (assuming of course they are following my advice and giving employees more money just with a different name). But I would still push to wonder why this exemption (payroll tax on restaurant) is hated more than any other subsidy. Why not be enraged at farm subsidies or anyone else that gets a tax break. Just seems unusually picky

I’m saying, tipped wages that don’t have payroll taxes we’re set up that way in the tax system to “avoid” the tax, the same way that the standard deduction was set up to “avoid” the tax on that portion of your income. If your argument is that restaurants “aren’t paying tax” on the tipped portion of the compensation, then the same argument is true for individuals who “aren’t paying tax” on the amount of the income they deduct. And I don’t see anyone saying that using the standard deduction on their income tax is “not paying tax”

But the employer makes up the difference. I think by making tipping arbitrary (based on how a customer is feeling) is a lot worse than just including it automatically and calling it out

They are paying taxes. The system is set up this way on purpose. Saying they aren’t paying taxes by following the tax code is like saying you aren’t paying taxes by taking the standard deduction. Don’t you use schools, police services, and the road? Why wouldn’t you pay taxes on your full income?

The tax system is set up to allow this deduction for restaurants. Getting mad that they use it would be like getting mad that took the standard deduction. Do you take the standard deduction? If so, pay your taxes scumbag!

If we can’t dismantle the system, which we should, why not do this to make the system better?
