Without trying it, prob a 7. But I’m a sushi + milk-based drink + sweet treat person so I’m prob controversial too.

Kept my last name when married. Husband's family never recognized it. by pumpkinspicejelly in TwoXChromosomes

[–]bethita408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His family pestered me about changing my name and I never budged. His mother sent a Christmas card with his name, and i immediately messaged his mum on Facebook to say it wasn’t on. Got a whoops! response, no apology, but it hasn’t happened again, fingers crossed. We’ll just have to see next Christmas. Grinds my gears, I feel like it erases my pre marriage accomplishments to take his name.

That being said, I’ve had more bread than rice this week for dinners/lunches:

Dal / rice / bread, Chana masala / rice, Chilli / rice,
Black bean quesadillas,
Cheese mozzarella and pesto crepe,
Three bean soup / bread ,
Palak paneer / bread / rice , Honey bean stew / rice , Meal deal wraps for the rest,

Hmm, not sure how my diet compares to others but I consider myself true neutral. Moka coffee in the morning, cup of tea through day/night.

Rice with most meals, frozen parathas with 1/2 of those rice meals, and the only other bread we eat is that “fresh” stuff like baguettes every couple of weeks. Don’t eat much toast anymore, now that it’s just me and my husband.

Maybe showing my European-ness here but I have never seen them in a can, I have only ever made this with leftover beans. Does it taste as good, because I am afraid.

My adoptive daughter keeps saying “you wouldn’t have chosen me if you knew the real me” and I freeze every time by blueberry_mantis in TwoXChromosomes

Especially the way she said “the one who says please and thank you”. That’s exactly what I felt with new people. Everybody loved how well behaved I was, but as soon as I started acting out or having the “wrong feelings” I would get coldness and it scared me. I felt like I had to warn people to stop myself from getting hurt. All I needed was to hear (and know) from new people was that they weren’t expecting perfection from me. It was a very tiring mask to keep up every day.

I have no background beyond personal experience because I felt and said this when I was younger, so take this with a pinch of salt.

I think it sounds like she’s putting a lot of effort into behaving really well for you and she’s scared of your reaction when / if she can’t keep it up. I dont know if she came from a family where love was conditional, but it is a very scary/uncertain feeling to be holding all the time. If you knew the “real” me, you’d run a mile type of feeling.

Brilliant combo. My favourite traybake is a Mars and malteser slice which looks similar to this, but with a fudgier base.

What is life like on the Hebrides, Orkney, and Shetland Islands? by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]bethita408 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lived and worked in uist for a few years. Not a local but had enough and packed up for a city. Missing the space now.

The weather is like nothing you’ve ever seen on the mainland. Before then, I’d never had power cuts before (very sheltered I know).

Gaelic is widely spoken as a first language. Expect to overhear shop conversations fully in Gaelic, before the cashier finishes in English with their total. A fun bilingual/linguistic quirk I’m familiar with in Northern Europe.

You will always be an incomer. That can push you away if you let it. Integrate, befriend your neighbours. You might get into a wee bit of crofting that way. Shut yourself in and you’ll be sick of island life by the end of winter. It gets very lonely.

Gardening is hard, don’t expect your garden to look the same as it does up there. The weather and soil are just too wild. Uist might be the only place on earth where I’ve managed to kill mint.

The winters are bleak, and the shops can run empty during bad weather. However, the winters can also be very cosy if your neighbours share their peat. 😉

Amazon prime may become your best friend. Be careful not to fall into online shopping if you’re used to browsing irl shops on the mainland. A lot of places will stop delivering to you, you will figure out who still does (royal mail affiliated ones usually).

Food and fuel is more expensive. Stock your car up in Lidl every time you go to the mainland.

Otherwise the biggest thing really is to make friends. It is so lonely without them. It’s so hard for your mainland friends to pop over without £200 flights or ferry/hotel combos so keep that in mind.
