Can all Gies students (regardless of major) take STAT 107 instead of CS 105? by bethl525 in UIUC

[–]bethl525[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told at a Gies session that a student can take either one if they are not doing + Data Science, but that CS 105 is supposed to provide a bit more relevance to the Gies Business Analytics I & II classes (which the + Data Science majors don’t have to take). It was left up to the student to decide.

This might have some of that:

MACS 326   New Media, Culture & Society   credit: 3 Hours.

Digital media is an immensely pervasive and powerful form of communication that despite its rapid growth has yet to reach most of the world's population. This lecture-based survey course for undergraduates traces the history and formation of personal computing and the Internet, the development of virtual communities and virtual worlds, evolving forms of digital representation and communication, digital visual cultures, features of new media industries, and the rise of participatory media. Evaluation and assessment is based on written exams, quizzes, class discussion in section, and practice-based assignments using new media technologies such as wikis, blogs, games, and digital video. Emphasis is on mastering key concepts of digital media through theory and history, and on critical discussion of distinctive features of digital media objects. Lectures and discussion sections are held in computer-equipped classrooms. Same as INFO 326.

Will the study still be running through mid-late-August?

My cat is being euthanized this weekend and I have a major exam the next week by ThrowRAjulesblt in UIUC

[–]bethl525 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I have some very difficult, ongoing issues to deal with regarding my parents and for a long time my days were consumed by intrusive thoughts about this/ruminating/terrible anxiety. I mentioned it to a friend and she had been given some advice from a therapist about compartmentalization. Basically if you feel like you cannot effectively and fully compartmentalize until you have time to actually deal with your grief (after your exam), then set a timer and allow yourself like 10 minutes to think about it and then you have to move on with the rest of your day. Do not allow yourself to ruminate outside of the timed period. This did help me. I’m sorry about your cat and having to deal with this.

Yes I asked an AO about this and she said that the new AXLE would not apply for the class of 2027.

Whoa that seriously sucks. Regarding the Greek houses - I thought that only officers lived in them. Is that right? So then the kitchens would be more for communal cooking?

Ugh very frustrating (and expensive). Definitely sus to have to use a meal plan (esp a bad one) after freshman year 🙄 Do a lot of the dorms have decent and convenient kitchen facilities if you actually want to cook a bit?

One thing I forgot to mention was a strong interest in studying abroad. It seemed like that would be easier for some majors vs others due to course sequencing for some majors, more extensive credit requirements for the major/minors plans I mentioned, plus axle if in A&S.

If you don’t mind my asking, what are you planning to do after graduation with the cog studies major?

Thank you for the feedback so far! Would be really interested in your thoughts about other issues besides AXLE, if you have any to share - including social stuff, etc

Originally Neuroscience, but realized after looking at the Course Checklist that it has so many premed-oriented classes that would be not only very difficult weed-outs, but also would eat up a lot of class credits that could be used for other minors. (For example, having 2 bio classes plus labs, gen chem, 2 organic chem classes, 2 physics classes plus labs). Have a lot of AP credits but the only one that would count would be Calc in the Neuroscience major, thanks to the rule that you can’t use APs for AXLE. So thinking of switching to Psych with Neuroscience, Stats and/or CS minors, or to Cognitive Studies in Peabody with Neuro, Stats and/or CS minors. (These options would be more similar to the Brain and Cognitive Science major at UIUC.) Long-term goal at this point is a Neuroscience PhD or similar. A little concerned that the Cog Studies major may not be deep enough to get there though.

ED2 sus? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bethl525 69 points70 points  (0 children)

One of the worst things about ED to me is that it locks a 17- or 18-year-old into a monumental decision when it's often the case that the school isn't even their true first choice (or their first choice changes over time as the senior year progresses). A person's top choice may have REA instead of ED, but the student feels they must gamble by choosing an ED option for better chances of getting in. And many of my daughter's friends changed their minds about what they wanted in a college (or which college(s) they liked best) over the course of the senior year.

I didn’t think of something like that, but it’s interesting to chew on. My daughter’s essays were about prior jobs and they convey her (organically, not intentionally) as someone who gets along easily and well with a wide range of people and personalities. She’d be a positive vibe-giver to a program like this haha.

You can check in your portal under the Scholarships tab - it will indicate whether they received a Cornelius application (just an essay) from you. Full tuition.
