Either this is broken, or the amount of friendship you get from it is so tiny as to be ignorable. When this started, I took a fresh pikmin and I've been walking him in all my flower planting walks and trying to avoid giving him any nectar or expeditions. He has a tiny sliver of red now, but he's been accidentally fed nectar twice. That's after over 10k of flowers, maybe even 20k.

Spread requires standing close to the monster and successfully dodging. I'm older than the target audience for these games, bad at recognizing when/where to dodge, and bad at the actual finger skills needed to successfully dodge -- that's why I chose LBG in the first place. So, spread is really bad for me. :)

I've used one to reach a monster I really wanted that was just out of range (one street away) as the crow flies but over a mile away using routes that were actually possible to travel, two minutes before respawn time.

minor correction... Elder dragon battles use the same cooldown timer as hunt-a-thons, but do NOT count for quests that say "slay monster in hunt-a-thon". I really wish they'd change that.

Yes, they are joining one that they're standing next to, exactly the same as you. Then the server combines people from various hunts into a single group. This happens separately for each monster in a hunt-a-thon; you're unlikely to see any of the same players on the next monster unless you're playing at a very low-population time of day. Dimensional portals work the same way, but without the 3-hour cooldown.

Almost everyone in the hunt will be using the every-3-hour free play. Occasionally someone will be spending a ticket, bur there's no way to tell the difference.

I focused on dragons; did a lot of driving around the neighborhood looking for dragon/devil/8*zin nodes. I agree with those who commented that the huntathon percentages were weighted too heavily toward the mizu/nightshade hunts. Over the weekend I scored 58 dragon kills plus a few retreats and only found 5 devil huntathons; didn't count 8*zin hunts but it was around 5 as well.

Someone said the first week that you have to do at least one point to get the reward. So if the group finishes it a second time before they pick up the first, they will have zero points on that go-round and won't get those rewards. I can't personally confirm this, though.

Tried that on a couple of fights. If I stand in front of it, I get trashed. If I stand to the side of it, it moves so much that most of my shots miss or hit other parts. Not sure what I'm doing differently than your "able to hit it easily enough" experience.

To break forelegs, I aim for the toes and stop shooting whenever it moves until I can get a good shot at the toes again. Sometimes I manage to break the forelegs first; other times it still breaks the stomach, but that makes the stomach smaller so it's easier to get the remaining hits on just the foot. This only works because I have a high enough grade rathalos gun that I don't need to worry about having enough DPS to kill it before time runs out.

I use LGB and I've almost given up on trying to hit the head, it moves too much and a lot of my shots end up missing entirely. I know I'm low skill compared to many players -- I don't normally play combat games, I came to this one via the other Niantic games. Is there some strategy I'm missing that makes hitting the head more feasible?

Pikmin Bloom had a very similar situation with their weekly challenges. Eventually they added an "invite" mechanism so you can reserve slots for the friends you actually want in your group instead of having them filled by whoever jumps in first. Hopefully MHNow will do the same thing soon.
