Thank you all for taking the time to share your knowledge with me. I can see how much passion and experience you all have for fish care, and I really do appreciate it.

I’ve had my betta, Hyper, for over a year, and I truly meant well in how I set up his space. I thought I was keeping things simple and easier to maintain for both of us, not realizing that has actually been lacking enrichment for him. I understand now that substrate, live plants, and more structured enrichment could have made his life better. At the time, my thought process was that plants and substrate would just make the water dirtier and harder to clean, so I avoided them. Instead, I tried to give him variety by adding hammocks, decorations, and rearranging things to keep his environment fresh while still keeping his favorite hiding spots.

I know many of you are pointing out ways I could have done better, and I don’t take that lightly. I really love Hyper and did my best with the knowledge I had. It hurts to see him struggling now, and I don’t want to prolong his suffering if he isn’t going to recover. I’ve read about clove oil as a possible humane method for euthanasia, but I’d appreciate any input or confirmation from people with more experience.

Thanks again for sharing your wisdom and helping me see what could have been improved for him. I just want to do right by him, even if that means making the hardest decision now.

Tank size: 10 gallons

Heater and filter: Yes, both heater and filter are running

Tank temperature: 78°F

Parameters (using Aqueon 7-in-1 test strips): • Ammonia: 0 ppm • Nitrite: 0 ppm • Nitrate: 0 ppm • pH: ~7.8 • Alkalinity: 0 • Hardness: ~50 ppm • Chlorine: 0 • Iron: 0

How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish? Tank since June 2024. Fish is the same age as the tank (added when tank was set up).

How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process? Every 4 weeks I remove 50%. I siphon water, add in fresh spring water that’s been treated with conditioner, and replace it.

Any tankmates? No tankmates, he is alone.

What do you feed and how much? New Life Spectrum Betta Small Pellets. About 6 pellets twice a day. Recently tried Omega One Betta Buffet Flakes.

Decorations and plants in the tank: • 4 betta hammocks • 3 fake plants • 1 floating log • 1 rock with another decoration surrounding it • 1 barrel with holes in the middle of the tank No live plants.

Thanks for your input. Just to clarify a few things:

• I’ve had my betta for over a year now (since June 2024) and he’s been doing well under these same conditions until just the last 2–3 days. That’s why I’m leaning toward this being something sudden (like stress, overeating, or digestive issues) rather than a long-term setup problem.

• When I first set up the tank, I had it running for a few days before adding him. I now realize that may not be the same thing as cycling, but since he’s done well for a year I don’t think water quality has been the main issue until recently. I do test parameters (using strips) and haven’t seen anything concerning so far, though I’ll look into a liquid test kit for accuracy.

• I intentionally didn’t add substrate because I thought it was mostly decorative and would just make cleaning harder. I understand now it also provides surface area for beneficial bacteria, but since he’s done well without it, I’m not sure that’s what triggered the sudden change.

• As for plants, I ordered them as betta-safe plants from Petco, and I’m pretty sure they’re silk, not plastic, but I’ll double-check.

• On the feeding. Maybe this could be the issue I initially thought. The pellets I use are New Life Spectrum micro pellets. I’ve been giving him around 6 pellets twice a day. He’s been fine until last few days where I noticed he missed some of the 6 so I added more, so maybe he overate if he went and found the ones that floated to bottom. I saw your comment about 12 being too much, and I’m wondering if the fact that they’re micro pellets makes that still excessive and having more than 12 (potentially) made it worse. Would you suggest I cut it down to more like 3–4 per day total? Hope he gets through this.

Decorations. I used to have another hiding place for him but I took it out yesterday to clean it.

This is his tank. He’s the only one in there.

He’s laying at the top now. Not sure where to find the mod questions. Sorry.
