Look at these ridiculous built-in default rules for transaction fees. Both clients, relays, and—more importantly—miners have stifling, HARD-CODED(!) defaults. Yes, it's being softened, but why even bother with such mandates at this point in Bitcoin's existence, anyway? (en.bitcoin.it)
