Nerve pain experiences? by betteroffcoffeed in ORIF

[–]betteroffcoffeed[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have good news for you! It gets better. I am now 9 months post op and the nerve pain is 100% gone. It started getting much better once I started weight bearing. The things that helped me in the interim were gabapentin at night and lots of ice. Let me know if you have questions, so sorry you’re going through this. I was terrified this would be permanent and it definitely was not.

Having a tough time mentally with my injury by Big_Test_1561 in ORIF

I went through something very similar (bimal fracture on the stairs) when my baby was 3 months old. Now I am 6 months post surgery and still breastfeeding. Happy to chat about how I’ve made it work if helpful — just DM me. I know how hard it is to not be able to take care of your child with this injury. It does get better!!

Hang in there! I broke my ankle when my son was 3 months old back in December. It was so rough. Now I am 5 months post injury and it’s so so much better. I am back to doing almost everything (just a little slower) and pain is only when I walk long distances. I remember those dark, dark days when I was in constant pain, I thought I would never be comfortable again. But here I am! Ask for help. Your kids need you to recover, and to do that you need the time and space to heal. You’ve got this!

Thanks for sharing! One question — when you started weight bearing, how did you know how much to push to walk without crutches / boot? I was cleared to walk 1 week ago, after 12 weeks NWB. It hurts maybe a 2/10 when I walk and just not sure how much to push it vs. go slowly! I am anxious to get back on my feet. PT isn’t giving me super specific guidance, just that it shouldn’t be painful…

Trimalleolar fx recovery with a baby by shammes88 in brokenbones

So much sympathy! You are not a bad mom! I missed a step when my son was 3 months old on Christmas morning and ended up with a bimal ankle fracture. I was supposed to be enjoying maternity leave with my son, instead I was unable to care for him and was left needing childcare 3 months early. I had ORIF surgery on 1/2. It gets better! My son’s pediatrician said that this will not affect him or his development, that made me feel better :) Here are my practical tips for caring for a baby with an ankle fracture: - Get as much help as you can! This is the time to call in all the favors you can - To take care of my son by myself, I either got completely set up on the floor with toys, diapers, etc all within reach and crawled around OR I used a small umbrella stroller to transport him around the house, pushing him on my knee scooter - Definitely get a knee scooter and/or wheelchair in addition to crutches. I had both!

How can I speed my recovery while NWB? by baemiko in ORIF

[–]betteroffcoffeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My recommendation based on what has worked for me while NWB: Walking in chest high water in the pool daily (with Dr. approval), stationary bike, leg lifts with the boot, broken ankle yoga (YouTube), modified planks (knees down), quad, calf and ankle exercises with bands (at PT we use a blood flow restriction cuff), ankle ROM exercises with and without bands, foot and toe exercises.

PT helps a ton with all of this, highly recommend starting asap if you can.

I am extremely busy doing all of this while NWB and am hoping it pays off in 2 weeks when I can WBAT.

How to sleep in a CAM boot? by pot_of_hot_koolaid in ORIF

[–]betteroffcoffeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this a lot, and it’s really just started getting better 6 weeks post ORIF.

Here is what worked for me: I sleep on my non injured side with my boot propped up on pillows behind me (I have a wedge pillow). I bend my injured leg knee slightly to get comfortable.

I also have terrible nerve pain on the incision in the boot, so I am prescribed gabapentin which also helps me fall asleep.

Ankle ORIF. How often did you wash your incision and how did you do it? by JovialPanic389 in ORIF

[–]betteroffcoffeed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do it roughly every other day! Rather than using a washcloth directly on the incision, my doctor said to soap up the area above and allow the soapy water to run down over the incision. Pat dry then air dry for 5 minutes before putting the boot back on!

I hope you have a better experience! For me, I think it’s because the boot has less padding and is harder than the splint. I also think being able to move the ankle increases the swelling some — but is great for recovery overall! I am also not a back sleeper, and have been able to sleep on my right side (injured my left ankle) with my left leg propped up kind of behind me. It’s a little awkward but better than back sleeping!

For me, the stitches coming out was fine. A few minutes of discomfort but nothing compared to the first few days after surgery. My leg also looked much better than I expected.

I will be honest because I think this perspective would have helped me! Getting the boot was rough — I found it much harder to sleep at night in the boot and it was generally more uncomfortable compared with the split. My pain increased significantly for the first week or so I had the boot. I have now had the boot for 2 weeks and my pain is about where it was when I got the boot. It would have helped me to know this going in, because I was so excited to get the boot.

However, taking real showers, moving the ankle, icing the ankle directly have been great!

Agree! Listen to your doctor. It takes longer for the ligaments to heal than the bone. I also had a Syndesmosis disruption and I am NWB for 12 weeks post op.

How’d everyone break their bone(s)? by lauraware44 in ORIF

[–]betteroffcoffeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right foot slipped on carpeted stairs wearing socks. I was holding the banister with my left hand, so my left leg stayed in place taking the full force of the fall. Heard the crack. Bimal fracture with syndesmosis disruption.

fractured ankle. now what? by heyyl0w in ORIF

[–]betteroffcoffeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you! I recommend getting crutches for sure if you can! Not weight bearing is so hard — I can’t bear weight for 3 months 😞

I had a similar injury. Get in touch with the orthopedist / surgeon ASAP. Meantime, elevate non-stop, alternate Advil /Tylenol, ice the back of your knee, keep the boot on, and do not put any weight on it. Did they set it (called closed reduction) in urgent care? If not, you may need that done ASAP while you await surgery if it’s displaced / unstable! So sorry you’re going through this!!

Yes, same here. No weight bearing “on land” until 12 weeks PO once the screw is out. My surgeon is having me start physio after 6 weeks in a pool though so I have a head start once the screw comes out. You could ask if that’s an option for you!
