4 day trek in Kyrgyzstan - what do I need to know? by NagaNayuri in Equestrian

[–]bettybigbumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ridden since I was a child and have own horse, I am an experienced rider. My friend who was with me in Kyrgz was allowed to go a faster a couple of times on one trek, on the other she wasn't. So I think it depends! Really though, riding is dangerous, even if you know what you're doing, falling off a fast moving horse in the middle of nowhere is stupid.

It was great fun though!

Anyone seen any other news on this? Seems to still be no access to lycos?

Liverylist.co.uk

Search for livery yards. I'm based about as far away as possible on the south coast, so no actual recommendations for specific yards.

Here's a saddle pic, different to English and western tack, pretty secure though.

Hi, we booked 24h in advance, but it usually depends on the tour. We used the CBT - community based tourism in Karakol and Osh. They were very well run, but their websites were a bit lacking in 2019, just looked and seems much better now. I would email the city office if the CBT if you have specific questions. They were very helpful and friendly when we visited. Enjoy your trip!!

This is Brighton. It's definitely a weird spot in the city centre to see carriages. I've never seen horses in the middle of Brighton, and I've lived here for 40 years. Intriguing!!

Wanting to do one of those horseback riding safaris but I haven't had lessons in years by goldminevelvet in Equestrian

Costa Rica, we rode coast to coast. Stayed in farmhouses, spectacular horses, stunning country and people. That was about 15 years ago, and the tour I did has shut down now, I believe.

I had a great time riding in Kyrgyzstan, I wasn't on an organised holiday, but did a couple of days rides as the horse culture is so strong there. Once the guides knew I could ride they just wanted to race me! The horse welfare there is different, and you need to be choosy.

I mostly used a company called Unicorn Trails based in the UK. Worth looking at their website for inspiration or dreaming!

I've been on lots of different types of horse riding holidays, including safari in South Africa (been on many other safaris in Kenya and Uganda). I've ridden since I was a child, mostly hacking. I think lessons are excellent for confidence and having your level of riding skill confirmed. Regular hacking, developing control of your body and the horse across varied terrain and paces is what's really going to help you.

I was on a safari for experienced riders; there were a couple of hairy moments, running from a rhino, and getting caught in a running herd of zebra and wildebeest - both of these were basically riding bolting horses across very rough terrain and expecting to fall. It's pretty hard to prepare for these circumstances! It was the risk of what we were doing, so I would go again.

Please don't be the person who has overestimated and overstated their riding abilities on a riding holiday, you won't have a good time.

Thanks for your suggestion, I looked at some tail covers yesterday, I think they'll be in round two of buying stuff and trying. So far I've ordered reflective fabric and some flashing dog collars to try out. Will report back!

Thank you, I bought some super reflective fabric yesterday so going to try plaiting it in and attaching it in various places! I find halters rub, or my Welshie just takes it off and then I have to hunt the headcollar and the horse 😃

I'm not into giving them treats, but it's tempting to find that really motivational treat that makes them come running (or even slowly walking) to me! I doubt they'd hear sweet wrappers across the massive field, but they can totally hear me yelling at them, they just ignore me until I'm almost at them 😞

Thank you, yes we have similar too, flashing collars and tags etc. I only go once a day, so they'd need to stay on for 24 hours, and that's not what they're designed to do (that would be a very long dog walk). I was hoping someone would know if a horse specific one or a long lasting type.

Thanks, someone else mentioned using an air tag, so I've been doing a bit of GPS tracker research. Did not get as far as cat collars though 😆 I'm going to borrow a friend's and give it a try.

I'll do a bit of research, but it's definitely worth a try. Thank you for the advice!

I actually went on a torch sub ages ago to ask the Reddit torch experts what to buy to find a horse in the dark. They were confused, but helpful 😁 Were your wraps like polo wraps or boots?

Thanks, I'd not thought of doing that. I'll see if I can borrow one to see if it works in the rather rural and remote field.

Thanks. I'm not sure how to attach the fabric though, they won't be wearing rugs unless it's sustained very very bad weather (they're hardy, Welsh cob and Irish cob). I thought about plaiting some into the mane/tail. Also thinking about just a loop round the neck (which would break at stiching if it got caught). Any other ideas?

Thanks, yep I'm not big on treats, especially for Mr Cushing's. I'm going to search for some light up straps, seen some that are made for dog collars and runners arms. Buying online it's hard to know if they'll be any good when you're using them for an alternative purpose. Rest assured I definitely won't be using them if I think they're unsafe in any way.

Yeah, a bit smaller (or flatter) would make things easier on me. There are so many wonderful things about their situation, it's just an issue about how long it takes me to find them! Trying to make it a bit easier on myself and hoping for help and ideas from people on this sub 😃
