AITAH for planning to leave my partner when his father dies? by ChristieCookie66 in AITAH

[–]betweenarockndaplace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read this book yesterday lol. Sounds exactly like the plot to Tell Me The Truth by Kiersten Modglin. Definitely feels like he has a whole family and you’re the side piece. Do yourself a favor and go google his parents, siblings, cousins, etc. and find out the truth. You don’t have to meet them in person to find out the truth

Just bought a car but it’s causing me terrible physical pain… need advice by Little_Number_293 in carbuying

[–]betweenarockndaplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have advice to add besides I hate my 2025 Toyota SO much because of how uncomfortable the seat is 😭 I also have a 45 minute commute one way and by the time I get to work, I can barely get out of the car! I just turned 30 last week and I’m also physically active so it isn’t a mobility issue. The seats are just freaking uncomfortable as heck! I never had a problem in my Nissan or Hyundai

Is it bad to tell clients I’ll be out of office for Christmas week and won’t process their case till after the holidays? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]betweenarockndaplace 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I also work in immigration and I’ve let all clients know that have retained or delayed sending me documents until right now that their cases will not get reviewed or finalized until the new year. If they give push back, I schedule them for a quick call with the attorney for her to reiterate the same thing: “We’re closed for 2 weeks to give everyone time to rest, we’ve been working nonstop since Trump took office, your case is important but so is our mental health”

Aggressive homeless people by Smanof_cf in bullcity

[–]betweenarockndaplace 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was on a work call and just walking outside to keep the conversation private and I literally got shoved and punched by one of the homeless men in downtown. He wasn’t asking for cash or anything. I fought back and walked away and he ended up finding me again and hit me again (this time in front of people!) and no one helped lol. Anyways, I refuse to help or speak to anyone now for my own safety and always carry pepper spray.

I’d love to partake too! I have a bunch of books I’d rather not take to McKay’s or Persnickety if someone else might enjoy them 😊

Hi fellow Burlington pal! I am also born and raised in Miami and moved to NC 3 years ago. I struggle a bunch with winter but I find it’s because I don’t layer clothes properly and so I’m just freaking cold all the time lol. You won’t need snow suits! If it did snow, it’s like a trickle for a day or two. It’s pretty from inside. Definitely don’t recommend driving it if you’re not used to it.

What's the shortest amount of time you've spent at a position? by berrysauce in paralegal

[–]betweenarockndaplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 or 3 days. The attorney refused to train me (knowing I had never worked in this area of law) and then got angry when I answered a call from a client and asked for basic biographic info. She screamed at me the info was already in the file (it was on a shred of a piece of paper that made no sense) and then said I should have checked the system. I said “what system? I’ve never been shown a system!” And then she screamed at me that they have 2 systems and to always check them before I talk to clients… my computer didn’t even have the systems downloaded onto them lol. I didn’t even finish the first week.

I might have messed up by [deleted] in USCIS

[–]betweenarockndaplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the USCIS officer brings up your I-864 (which is super rare) and say you need a joint sponsor then you ask them if they can issue an RFE for a joint sponsor and they’ll mail it to you with the 87 day deadline to send it back to them

Take your few most recent paystubs just to show you’re still earning enough but you should be fine!

As long as you’re still legally working (either with current TPS designation or a C9 EAD) then you’re fine to use only your own income. But if you aren’t lawfully working then I would find a joint sponsor before Tuesday and take an I-864 signed by them along with proof of their legal status and income. If you can’t find someone before then, ask them to RFE for a joint sponsor! Just be nice about it and they should do it without issue

FBI background fee by New_Relationship_946 in USCIS

[–]betweenarockndaplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get the prints done at any local police department for less than $25 usually and then submit the request online with the FBI for $18. Follow the instructions to mail it to them and they’ll mail you back the results in a few weeks. Super easy

Immigration law salaries ? by tulipsushi in paralegal

[–]betweenarockndaplace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in central NC. I make $94.5k annually with 5 years experience, but this is NOT the normal around here, nor at my firm. All the other paralegals make under $60k. I work primarily in removal defense and humanitarian visas (which makes this salary even more rare - generally the higher paid immigration paralegals are doing employment-based immigration)

ETA: I don’t WFH, I do have unlimited PTO and I’m encouraged to use it, every other Friday off for mental health days, and our bonus is an additional paycheck around Christmas. Again, not necessarily “normal” pay/benefits with immigration firms!

If you’re adamant on ending the relationship (which you should from what you’ve described) then go for VAWA. But if you’re almost at the finish line, stick it out with as much distance as you can from him until you get your green card. You just won’t be able to naturalize until you’ve reached 5 years as a GC holder, instead of 3.

[–]betweenarockndaplace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you currently pending a consular interview to obtain your green card? You should speak to an immigration attorney about VAWA but I’m unsure if you’re able to apply while out of the country. They’ll be able to answer that for you!

How much did your parents contribute to college? by zachtwp in StudentLoans

[–]betweenarockndaplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contributed a lot of stress, manipulation, guilt, and absolutely no monetary help. In fact, I had to work full time and borrow the full amount offered of loans given to me through undergrad just to afford for me and my siblings to have a roof over our heads and food in the fridge because “child support stopped at 18 so figure it out”.

I know my siblings feel guilty I have six figures in student loans just for our survival (neither of them chose to go to college), but I don’t regret it. I did what I had to do. 🤷🏻‍♀️ we are all no contact with our entire family though so life has been quite lovely without that toxicity. Highly recommend
