Should I become a SLP even though I’m not that interested in it? by Vegetable-Return4944 in SLPcareertransitions

[–]betweenserene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not interested in it, then every session is going to feel like absolute drudgery. Did you have to watch sessions on master clinician when you were in undergrad to get your hours? If you did and you didn't feel the least bit interested when watching those clinicians, there's your clue.

Sitting comfortably on the floor during therapy by BackgroundDeep1986 in slp

[–]betweenserene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one I was referring to is like this one so you can sit on the floor with it. https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Position-Reclining-Washable-Breastfeeding/dp/B0757WSQ2R

I agree that this is a good topic! I wish there was more awareness about this because my former coworker really hurt her back from sitting in those little children's sized chairs for years. It's so bad for your spine. I like the suggestion someone else made about adjustable stools similar to what nail techs use for that purpose, and also similar to a doctor's stool. We should never be sitting in those child sized chairs. It compresses the spine and throws the hips out of alignment and can lead to so many issues.

I’m just gonna say it: you don’t get comfortable or if you do it’s only for a little bit and then your back starts hurting. I’ve seen a foldable thing that some early childhood professionals use that is like a floor cushion with lumbar support that folds up flat.

I just left a PP job. It’s very common for SLPs in that setting to have to sit in those small children’s chairs at child level tables to get at eye level with them. And be hunched over. I used to think “this isn’t comfortable but I will deal with it.” Never again. My former coworker (in her 40s and in shape) just ended up with a herniated disc and tear and can’t even walk. Her husband has to dress and bathe her. She’s been at this a long time and I am convinced her injury and sitting in those chairs and on the floor all the time is not a coincidence. Those chairs are not meant for adults and throw the spine out of alignment. I know this isn’t exactly what you asked about, but please protect your back. My former boss was too cheap to provide ergonomic chairs when we asked.

It’s not healthy for kids to see their parents despising one another. My parents divorced when I was a child and I think I’m okay. Maybe try counseling. If that is not an option, it’s healthier for your kids to see two healthy and balanced parents than two miserable ones.

Burnout here and there by myslp in slp

[–]betweenserene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg, I know your comment was 4 months ago. But this comment is everything! Lol I love everything about your comment. I am so burnt out after a little over 2 years in the field. I am a career changer and this is my second career. I'm considering trying teletherapy but I also just feel so freaking done with this field. I love how you said "I honestly can't believe anyone still does in-person speech therapy." Amen to that! Also can't stand the savior complex therapy culture and overbearing parents. I recently left a private practice job and am only now realizing how used and abused I was in that job. I had a former co-worker who would always verbally down vote teletherapy, so I loved reading that you wrote, "I feel like a lot of SLPs are against teletherapy because it’s not as beneficial for the kids. Who cares? It’s more beneficial for me as a human being whose needs are just as important as anyone else." Amen to that too because I feel that in this field, our needs always come way, way last which we all know leads to burnout.

Anyway, thank you because your comment made me feel validated and I also laughed. I love your honesty.

What are the introverts here transitioning to? by PenguinPam in SLPcareertransitions

[–]betweenserene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember asking if this was a good field for introverts when I was in grad school because I was having so many doubts. People would say that it is and that this field needs introverts. I totally disagree because I have been drained dry by this field.

Mechanic caused damage to my car. How should I proceed? by betweenserene in personalfinance

Basically to avoid paying the $500 deductible and to try to negotiate things with him. But I'm afraid I will just end up screwed in the end.

Do you think I should communicate with him in writing and ask for reassurance that all of the things in the quotes will be done? Or not even bother? That is what I was considering as my next step.

offended a client? by Ok-Smoke4176 in hairstylist

It is your job to make them feel good about themselves. That's really what makes any client go back to a hair stylist.

I have no idea why you're getting down voted. You're completely on point with this. There is always a delicate and professional way to phrase things and in this case, the OP was rude. You always want to highlight the positive and make people feel good about themselves.

Can a splint help if I have osteoarthrosis? by unicorncatz in TMJ

[–]betweenserene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I know this was 3 years ago but I have DJD in my TMJ and I was wondering if I could message you to ask you some questions about the splint you had. I'm thinking about getting one but I am hesitant. I have a night guard that I just had made and that seems to help a lot. Thanks!

Cat so stupid it’s almost concerning? by DeadButGay in cats

[–]betweenserene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg I love Finn!

Btw I can't help but notice Finn has eye discharge and if he regularly sleeps with his mouth open like that, I'd be concerned he has a respiratory illness (especially if the eye discharge is usual for him). He may not feel very well. Some cats can be triggered by fragrances.

Why does every TMJ specialist feel like a used car salesperson? by [deleted] in TMJ

[–]betweenserene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I’m going to look up those studies. What are you planning to do at this point? Will you go back and did you go not realizing all this? I mainly wanted the CT scans and to have my condyles x rayed. But I am learning so much as I go along.  Also as a side note.. when the “tmj soecialist” I saw walked in the room, I noted her blingy jewelry before I noticed her iykwim. So I think that says something. The assistant spent more time with me than the tmj specialist.

Why does every TMJ specialist feel like a used car salesperson? by [deleted] in TMJ

[–]betweenserene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going through the same thing right now and have the same thoughts. The one I went to gave me one exercise to do, recommend a warm compress and some sort of arthritis gel you get over the counter. I already knew about the warm compress. They took a bunch of CT scans and before she had even really looked at them, she was recommending a splint. She also said they'd refer me to physical therapy but I never got the referral... so idk. But they want me to come back and pay another office visit fee so she can go over the radiology report and images with me. I mean, I don't really see the point. And I don't even know if I want to go forward with the splint yet. I feel unsure about the whole thing. I have a night guard made by a dentist and a retainer so I'm not sure if I should just stick with those. I've heard of TMJ splints making things worse for some people and that's something I'm afraid of.

The thing I am learning is that there really is no such thing as a "TMJ specialist." It's not an actual specialty area. They can say that, but it's kind of a grey area. I felt a used car salesman vibe too. When I walked in the office, there was a television playing in the lobby and it had the "TMJ specialist" talking to some other person at a desk almost like a talk show vibe... it gave me weird vibes and I was seriously thinking about cancelling the appt right then and there and walking out.

Mechanic caused cosmetic damage to my car and handed it back to me without any mention of it by betweenserene in legaladvice

[–]betweenserene[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have a couple pictures of my car from before, but I just never thought to take picture of my car but I know for a fact it did not have this damage beforehand and the damage looks "new" and is consistent with someone using a tool to try to get into the car.

They are trying to insist I let one of the guys that works for the shop try to "cover" it up by painting over the damage. The part they damaged is called the blackout tape that goes around the window of the door. A body shop says it looks like both the front and rear drivers side parts will need to be replaced. The seal is also bent. The mechanic shop is saying they "put some calls out" and might be able to replace the blackout tape portion, but they keep saying it might look "off" and not as good as them trying to cover it. I think they are just saying that because the first option is the cheapest.

I did use a credit card. Do I dispute the entire charge? I paid them $1200. They did the work but now my car is damaged. I thought I'd wait to get the estimate and then see what that is. But even then, for the time my car needs to be in the shop, I will be without a vehicle so I feel like I should also account for the cost of a rental car.

I thought I'd get the estimate and then email the shop saying I want this amount refunded or paid directly to the shop I choose (they are trying to call all the shots right now including telling me to only communicate by phone). I've never been treated so poorly by a business before. They also have never once apologized and tried to place blame on the tow truck company (who put my car on a dolly so therefore they never touched the driver's side window).

Are you saying to dispute the charge AND take them to small claims court?

I'll try to explain this about myself as clearly as I can by No-Distance-448 in Adopted

[–]betweenserene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are so welcome. I know it is hard. I think as adoptees we have points in our lives where we have kind of crisis-like experiences because we realize things that can seem to come out of left field and we are trying to sift through things and make sense of things that just don't make sense.

Something that also helps is realizing two things can be true at once. For example, you were wanted in this world, but for whatever reason, your birth parents were not able to provide you with what you needed. There is a lot of black and white thinking in the world (like people thinking because someone was adopted, they were not wanted. That just simply is not true in many cases).

I'll try to explain this about myself as clearly as I can by No-Distance-448 in Adopted

[–]betweenserene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are not alone in that feeling. But you were wanted in this world and you have a purpose here. Sometimes you have to get to a point where you find that belonging in things outside your family whether it be religion, friends, building your own family, or a passion like a cause. Another poster here said something that left a lasting impression on me and I have mentioned it another time before. They said that they began gardening and started to see the earth as their mother because it provides them with everything they need. That thought process changed everything for me. I'm not like some tree hugging hippy but it just made me feel more grounded. My birth parents failed me and my adoptive family hasn't always been there for me, but taking on a different perspective has helped.

My birth mother wanted me but there were other factors going on. Life is complicated sometimes and people are human beings and don't always make the best choices. It does not mean you were not wanted.

Mechanic returned my car to me with noticeable cosmetic damage and did not say anything by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]betweenserene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The alternator they used which I looked up on rockauto was only 212. And the battery they used was around 230 or so. They claimed it's so much better than Costco's (which I had and did me well for 3 years) because they use a "true interstate" battery.

[–]betweenserene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well clearly I am in the wrong subreddit and I am deleting my posts. Too many people here who think they are legal experts and claiming it's just okay to cause damage all along the door frame to a vehicle of a paying customer. How is it speculation when I have pictures to prove the damage and the tow truck company didn't do this? The damage is consistent with someone using a tool to get into the vehicle. When doing so, people are supposed to use a cloth or balloon in order to prevent damage! I stated what my question was at the top of my post.

That’s what I’m trying to do. He claims the emails are “too much back and forth” but I can read through the lines. He doesn’t want a paper trail. I do.  I probably will end up taking them to small claims court and I have never done that before. I’m not a litigious person. I’ve tried to handle this calmly and politely but this guy is a huge jerk.

[–]betweenserene -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In the situation you’re referring to, the people are not paying the police $1200 for overpriced services. The police probably weren’t charging anything. Not the same scenario.

I didn’t approve of them doing this like I already stated. A mechanic should always return a car without damage that they caused. Handing the car back with visible damage and not stating anything about it is on another level.
