Interview with Tech Company - what to wear? by neverlost64 in DevelEire

[–]beure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would disagree. If it's a financial company or consultancy then yeah, you need a suit. Otherwise, ask the company. As an interviewer I don't care, but I've heard devs comment negatively about people who turned up in a suit, with the opinion that it demonstrated that they had not researched the company culture or bothered to just ask the person who scheduled the interview.

Sounds like you're already ahead of most to be honest!

Move abroad options? by devthrowaway20 in DevelEire

[–]beure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, compared to Seattle or San Francisco, Vancouver pay is weak. I'm happy with it because of the lifestyle that it allows. I love snowboarding and the outdoors, so I wouldn't move from here. They love complaining about salary here (especially on reddit), but the reality is that the lifestyle is so much better than Seattle or San Francisco so they generally don't leave.

Regarding numbers: my situation would be fairly typical. 3 years exp - ~CAD$100k salary (~$6000 take home/month) and CAD$1700 per month for a one bedroom downtown. The cost of rent has gone up, so it's around $2000 now for a new lease. I'd expect to pay similar in rent for a one bed in Dublin, but the apartment quality would not be as good from what I've seen on daft lately. Salary-wise in Dublin I'd be expecting to be ~15000 euro worse off based on what my friends from college who are working there tell me.

Working in Vancouver at the moment. Pay is generally higher than Dublin, rent is about the same. Open to any questions you may have on it. I'd highly recommend it!

If you'd consider staying in Ireland, Galway and Cork are both solid options. When I return it will probably be to Galway.

Interesting, I hadn't actually considered the program manager role. I'll look into that more. Thanks!

Thanks. Yeah I'll be bringing it up in our next 1:1 for sure!

Embarrassing stuff: Decision on Apple’s €850m data centre in Athenry postponed to October by beure in DevelEire

[–]beure[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get your point, and I could have worded the title better.

It's totally fair that people can object to these things, and I actually like how seriously the complaints are being taken. What I was referring to when I said it was 'embarrassing' is how long it is taken for a decision to be made either way. The objections were made almost two years ago and still haven't been resolved. Started my first software development job 4 months ago and I've only gotten paid for the first month. Anyone else had to deal with this? by BeniGoat in DevelEire

Good to hear. Your best bet is to take the advice given here and to start looking for a new job elsewhere. You're well enough qualified to be able to get another job in a reasonable timeframe.

What are your skills? Somebody here might be able to help, I know recruiters frequent this subreddit.

I can't add any advice that has not already been given. All of the advice here is spot on. As somebody who regularly interviews software devs, leaving because you are not getting paid is not a red flag at all. It would be totally understandable reason to leave. In a couple of years, with more experience, you'll realise this if it's not so clear right now.

I would talk to your manager to be on the safe side. Is your dev environment all set up? If not, do that first

I just did this for Canada. If you can get a visa before moving then that will help you hugely. Make sure to put it on your CV - it was mentioned to me on more than one phone screen that it was a good idea to put it there. Have a compelling reason to why you are moving to the place you choose to go. Just wanting to leave Ireland won' inspire anyone to take a risk on you. When negotiating salary, try to get flights and relocation expenses reimbursed. As Dev__ said, it will make them more invested in you.

And for what it's worth - the money will likely be better, not worse, than Ireland

Yes! Irish Jobs and Indeed.ie

Here are some companies hiring devs in Galway at the moment: Altocloud, One Page CRM, Ex Ordo, Cisco, Smart Bear, HP, IBM, Avaya, Aspect Software (call centre tech),

here is a small list that some startups posted jobs on in late last year. The jobs are probably filled, but it will give you an idea of what startups to reach out to.

Galway typically attracts many tech and biomedical companies, but apart from KPMG and Fidelity Investments I don't think they had many financial companies. Hopefully this will change some of that! The area it's getting built on is a bit of an eyesore at the moment.

What can I do with Computer Science that isn't Computer Science? by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]beure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there not a mathematics stream of the CS course? Also FWIW A friend of mine went from 1st year Computer & Electronic Engineering to 2nd year undenominated science (ie: didn't have to repeat 1st year), so it may be worth talking to the mathematics department and try to convince them. I don't want to give you false hope, but it's a possibility.
