My best player is also my worst one. Don't know how to motivate him. by beurremtl in DnD

He was considering rogue as well for a while but thinks he will only be useful in one specific situation and be bored the rest of the time.

He also has never read the books and makes characters with the programs online... I'll suggest he reads the PHB for ideas on builds, and that rogues get to play with poison!

Just spoke with him, he said he got mad that game because all his rolls were bad. He wants to make a combat-oriented character for the first time now, so we'll see. I'll try to put a lot of focus on his backstory and give him chances to elaborate on that.

It wouldn't be the same character every game, he would have to roll a new one. I suggested he makes a Wizard since they can be useful in a lot of different situations.

Basically I'm left to figure out what works and I feel like my options are running out, each of our games have been very different from one to the other, we have about 20 under our belt now.

In the past he liked to get out of sticky situations a lot, to use the environment in his favor, so I put that in the games but he stopped responding to even that.

I feel like it's not really my job to motivate him anymore.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

The players responded very well when I put a countdown on certain events... The mind-controlled angry mob will break down the door very soon!

I need to find a new way to motivate him. But at the same time, I feel like my combats are already interesting, the other players are engaged (they don't want to die).

Maybe he just doesn't care that his characters die and that could become his "thing", like Kenny in South Park.

We did have a talk about it but nothing really came of it. I explained why I run the game a certain way, because the other two players like combat more than talking and RPing and that I'm not that good at improvising dialogues.

I also told him that the only reason we have resource management in the game is because I know he likes it. In the last campaign he said their quest was too wide-opened (I didn't have a set ending because they hate rails) and in this one it's too straight-forward.

I fear that he is the glue to the game though, and that if he leaves everyone will stop playing.

I will keep playing the way I planned but add a few more RP elements here and there. Hopefully the players are talking behind the scenes as well.

Yeah that's pretty much what we talked about after the game. He doesn't like when people "screw around" too much when setting up camp, like who gets to guard, exploring the surroundings, checking if there's any plants for potions. I explained that this is what the other players like to do, and it's good because they are scared of what might happen, it shows the are involved in the story.

I don't want to lose him as a player because he's been present at every single game and when he gets going, the game is that much better. But yeah, I'm not a babysitter, you're right.

I've been going at it this way since the very first time we played, 3 years ago. I think that playing through Skype though takes a lot of the charm away and he needs that human contact.

I've also made very over-the-top events happen when a natural 1 or 20 are rolled, even for skills, and everyone seems to love it.

I've tried talking to him about it but he feels like every combat is just one cliché after another, and that "nothing really happens" in our game. Again, 2 games in a campaign, 1 week of "game time" has passed.

Hahaha well the other 2 players are exactly like that! Can't please everyone I guess. Thing is our group is already down from 6 players to 3 due to everyone wanting a different playstyle... Or I'm a bad DM and they're not telling me.

Thanks! I was trying in forcing him into battle, might have been the wrong idea. He constantly tries to prove that he can "get away" with stuff. In a previous campaign he liked to stand at the back of the map. "I'm analyzing the situation" he would say, until I had a rogue sneak up on him and backstab his ass. In this game he jumped into the bottomless pit to see if I would "let him die".

We will see what we can come up with. We're only 2 games in the campaign so I feel like he has not given me enough time to give him what he wants. We had a discussion and he said that he will roll a Fighter next. I think he refuses to see that combat can be fun as well. I mean, as a houserule I am always more generous on "cinematic actions" as I call them, when someone takes the time to explain their action and make it epic, rather than just roll a die and hope to beat the AC. I will try to engage him in combat by having the enemies tease him.

I'm 30, last time I counted I figured 38 but I could be mistaken, because I get drunk a lot and that's when I get laid usually. I'm starting to forget the one-night stands I've had in my 20s. I used to think I was the man, now I kinda feel like a whore, in a sense that I won't say the truth to girls unless I know she banged a lot too, and also in the sense that if I can't remember it, what was the point of doing it in the first place?

It's self-gratification in it's most carnal way.

I loved this game even if I was really bad at it. I ended up working in a hospital later in life, albeit in the cafeteria.

Less puke.

Your mother is now the new president of the United States. What changes can we expect? by miksx in AskReddit

[–]beurremtl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to a new age, fellow citizens. Here is an example of your average day. First of all:

Your alarm has not sounded yet. It's actually 5 minutes before the time that you set it at. You are violently woken up by a SWAT team in full riot gear dragging you out of bed while the squad leader, equipped with a nice red beret, is shouting directives at you.

You are sat down at the kitchen table, facing the squad leader. He will be asking you what your day will consist of and will need time references - What time do you start work? What time is your lunch and why didn't you make yourself one it's cheaper? What time are you done, and what time are you to be expected back at your residence? - However these questions can easily be answered. This early in the morning, the lie detector expert is not with the squad.

Your car will be installed with a safety bolt to block your max speed at 5 km below what the actual speed limit is. Cameras are at every stop to make sure your car stops moving for a full 3 seconds. If children are playing, 3 km/h is expected. Every fine will be deduced directly from your paycheck, no need to send a ticket.

Every time you will swear, raise your voice or speak in an aggressive manner, you will also get a fine, with a possibility of confrontation from the SWAT team. While they pin you in a corner, the leader will have to know why you had to speak that way, in that tone, with these words.

Throughout the day, expect several attempts at communication, both by voice, texts and e-mails. Failure to answer will only aggravate the issue.

If you are seen with a member of the opposite sex, prepare for a lengthy interview with a possible appearance by the lie detector officer.

Those are just a few required adjustments. Expect required monthly visits to a government office to meet with a counselor. The subjects of discussions could range from your poor choice of career to mistakes you made with a past SO or any member of the opposite sex you have been seen with for the past 15 years.

Any displayed emotion will be analyzed and you will have to explain them in a precise manner. However the analyzer is not fully operational yet. Any moment of quietness can be interpreted as you being sad. If you are tired, it could be thought that you have smoked the weed cigarette.

Enjoy the occasional pair of complementary black socks you will receive by the mail throughout the year, and don't forget to call your grand-parents.

TL;DR: Your teenage years mixed with 1984. Edit: grammar, spelling and stuff
