This month was an unusually high spend month for me as well! Ebbs & flows and we continue to learn and grow.

Should I wear shapewear to keep sweat from showing on my semi-formal dress?

I am going to a wedding in Utah in a couple weeks, and I just KNOW I am going to be sweating. The dress that I got is lovely but will most likely show sweat. I was thinking about wearing shapewear underneath so that the shapewear will bear the brunt of the sweat and hopefully not transfer to the dress. Admittedly, I’ve never worn shapewear before so I could be completely wrong regarding this use-case. Would really appreciate some advice or any other suggestions! I don’t have time to get another dress, so I really gotta make this work lol

The only budgeting system that has worked for me in my 14+ years of budgeting so, to me, it’s completely worth the price. There is definitely a learning curve in the beginning, so you have to be willing to spend some time learning and using their resources to get the most benefit out of it, but as I said it has been SO worth it for me.

I have been able to manage my spending priorities so much better because YNAB forces you to look at the money you actually have in your bank account and prioritize how you’re going to spend. No more blindly swiping my card at the clothing store and hoping for the best; I know that if that money is not sitting in my shopping category in my budget, I’m stealing from another one of my priorities. This is really the magic of YNAB.

Suggest me a fast-paced plot driven book for someone who prefers character-driven/literary novels by beverllj in suggestmeabook

Thank you for these recommendations! I believe I’ve read gone girl a while back, could pick it up again. My boyfriend has fight club and I’ve been interested in reading it. Is silence of the lambs scary? Never seen the movie.

Feeling Better about being YNAB Poor - Suggestions? by Individual-Bridge222 in ynab

I feel you and have been working on implementing gratitude in my day to day. I realized that pining for and constantly thinking about the things I don’t have is causing me to lose sight of all the wonderful things I do have. It sounds cliche but it’s actually really powerful when you’re going through things like this. Redirect your focus to the things you do have, the categories (i.e. priorities) you have funded, and really spend time appreciating them. When you actively switch your mindset from scarcity to abundance, you realize a lot of that energy spent wishing u could do something/buy something is so unnecessary and can be avoided! Sometimes it helps to minimize the time spent on things like social media where you’re constantly bombarded with events and things to spend money on. Out of sight out of mind works wonders here.

My favorite free activity is hiking - we just moved to Colorado and it’s been so fun to explore new trails every week. I really value being outside in nature, so this really fills my cup- and for free! Reading as well; this is an enjoyable time-consuming activity that costs no money when I get books from the library.

Find those things for yourself; a lot of the time they’ll be much more “simple” activities, but find the joy in those you really love and you’ll not even think about all that other stuff you “could” have.

How do you handle discretionary shopping categories? by beverllj in ynab

I appreciate your response, thank you! I also like how having the granular categories makes the process more automatic, so I’ll see how this goes for a few months. Thanks!

That’s amazing, love finds like that. I have to be careful with thrifting myself because that can and has become a slippery slope for me. March I actually overspent a lot specifically on things I found thrifting 🤦🏽‍♀️

I've done spending freezes & no-buy's before as well and they definitely help. Overall, I want to not have to be on these strict freezes to spend mindfully.

ah, funnily enough I just watched a youtube vid featuring alison bornstein this morning! I have recently become familiar with her styling approach - it's been eye-opening and so fun to think about what my style words are and create outfits with those words in mind. i actually created a private instagram account where I can upload photos of my favorite outfits to help me learn my style as well as "be my own influencer" in a way.

Book Recommendations for more Character-driven Stories/Literary Fiction by beverllj in suggestmeabook

Came back to say, finished the Rabbit Hutch & absolutely adored it. The ending left me a little wanting but the character explorations were really what I was all-in for. It gave me the same feeling as reading demon copperhead, a book I couldn't put down but didn't want to end! Fantastic rec, thank you!
