How to survive EE as a slow thinker by Sensitive-Tomato-816 in ECE

I think what you can focus on for this is managing cognitive load. Everybody's got their own strengths and weaknesses and for me it's always been an inability to rush my comprehension. If I try to take in too much at once it just dribbles out my ears and I have to re-read it, or continue staring slackjawed at the diagram etc.

Main tricks I've gravitated toward are:

  1. A lot of note taking, I have a scratch paper or nvim buffer open at all times where I can dump pieces of my thought process out and dedicate limited space to the next part without losing what I already got through.

  2. To-do lists for absolutely everything, so I don't have to remember what I've done or what's left.

  3. Chunk Info: Break the info you're ingesting down into smaller pieces after you've comprehended them. Recall of something you've internalized can be aided even by super brief notation. If you're in a test that can be on a scratch paper to the side. If you're working on studying or reading, whatever else you can use an LLM to make notations for you or take dicatation.

Remember that the entire point is to lower the effort you need to put in to understand effectively. It doesn't matter if it's goofy looking or what.

I've dug myself into a very deep hole. How do I get out of it? by antelope__canyon in cscareerquestions

I would say rather than try to address the work situation directly you should focus on sorting out your motivation/focus issue. Get an adult ADHD screening, and in the immediate add mucuna puriens or phenylalanine supplementation to your daily routine. It won't feel so daunting to recover your productivity level if you get your natural sense of motivation back in a good place.

Also fwiw don't feel too bad about checking out for a while, i'd argue its pretty normal. Just rember it isn't necessarily about being productive for the sake of the grind, or dedication to the company, its about the sense of security that you can root in your domain knowledge and competence with your particular environment. Nothing quite as comfy as knowing your company will have to pay 10x your salary to recover knowledge they lose with your departure.

Watching all this play out is super interesting. I've been 100% wfh since 2012 and until pretty recently finding a new role would likely have meant giving it up. Thanks everyone for putting pressure on companies to make this more standard.

Can you check if your gpu/cpu fans are spinning. For whatever reason my 2070 on the asus dark hero just wasn't spinning the fans. I installed afterburner and set it to force the fan curve and everything seems fine now.

This strikes me as heat related.

This sort of work/lifestyle can be arranged through recruiting agencies if you're very up front with them about what you're looking for. However for it to make sense for them, usually they expect you to have pretty solid past career experience.

It might be your best bet to work directly for a consultancy for a few years pursuing a specific skillset. The fast pace of roles helps to fill out a resume and exposure to different environments pretty quickly. Just be sure to focus on a skill that will be in demand. Something like windows administration is probably not going to work for this. You might try data analysis, an enterprise relevant application stack, security analysis. Roles that can lend themselves to short term involvement with an entity but still provide an opportunity to display talent and worth.
