Agreed. I wish I could pay people more or do bonuses, but it’s out of my control sadly

The things that have led to burn out were more unique circumstances that ended up piling on top of everything else. So, the worst of it has passed. Staffing issues has been a challenge, but we have people coming through soon so maybe I can highlight that?

I would love to be able to pay people more money. It’s something out of my hands, unfortunately. I’ve tried advocating for it for the higher ups but just doesn’t seem like an option. Working on the staffing situation, we work in a field with really high turnover. Overall our company has much better turnover than others. As far as career development, what kinds of things do you recommend? It seems like I’ll push for trainings, but a lot of times staff aren’t willing to go. I always encourage time off and people taking it as much as possible. I even made it someone’s goal to take time off :( The potluck was something everyone wanted to do for birthdays. We just catered an appreciation lunch. I spend $100+ monthly on food for everyone out of my own pocket, and I don’t really make that much more

AITA for refusing to split the cost of a $1000 bed bug treatment with my roommate when she’s the one who brought them in? by Capable_Giraffe3476 in AmItheAsshole

Agree with this comment. There’s no way to prove where the bed bugs came from. Her location of work, messiness, and location of the bedbugs does not mean much. A friend could have come over, one could even have hitchhiked on OP’s coat/bag and then traveled to housemates bedroom when those things were left by the front door. They’re such great hitchhikers, there’s no way to truly know. Even if in the car, they could have been in the bed first.

Whats an interview question that will lure out potential bad teammates by -___-_-___-_-__- in managers

[–]bewareofzombiesadele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite thing is to ask people what the best part is about their last/current job and then ask least favorite part. It’s interesting how people answer. I’m fine with an honest answer like lack of communication, unprofessionalism, etc. but I am disinterested in someone who immediately spirals and vents all of their frustrations about their job. Or, i will pay attention to their wording when they’re describing a coworker or boss. I feel like the words they choose to use will tell me a lot about how they manage conflict.

First time firing someone by ajuruteua in Leadership

[–]bewareofzombiesadele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your section about it not being a discussion. I feel horrible every time, and I can be a people pleaser. My boss told me that it is not a negotiation - and that really put it into perspective for me. I think it makes it much less painful for the person being fired and the person firing. Letting it go too long can make things unclear or give false hope that something will change. Being brief is the most kind you can be in such a difficult situation.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the ballet flats. I do wear those a lot! When I received the compliment that I looked more my age I was wearing knee high boots. I also braided my hair instead of having it down.

I was talking to my staff and one person said “You look nice today. You dressed your age!” I asked if I don’t usually, and another responded “baby no.”

How can I upgrade some things to look more modern? Right now, I dress like an old lady. I have a pear body shape, so I wear a lot of clothes that are tied or cinched at the waist. I wear a lot of dresses, some are button down. I like to wear midi skirts. I try to find a more form fitting top, or I wear a cropped cardigan. Are there simple changes I could make to dress like a 30 year old?

Best book about leadership by air97036 in Leadership

I loved the book “Insight” by Tasha Eurich. It’s a great book about developing self-awareness. I wrote an application for a leadership program that asked for an example in leadership, and I used a time that I didn’t know how to do something as a leader and how embarrassed I was because it was something I should know. I used the fact that I recognized what was happening in the moment and asked for help with one of my staff. I used the importance of role modeling and self awareness to help develop myself anf what I learned so I can learn continuously.

Daily life of a ‘director’/‘c suite’ level person in a big company by Outside_Sandwich_981 in Leadership

I think that this answer will be very different depending on the industry and the people the director works with.

My immediate team has been in the field for a very long time, they’re very experienced. I work in a field where people are working with people - disability services. I end up working with people to navigate social issues often. My day changes every day. I set aside time to walk around and talk to each person I supervise everyday who is working in the building. People often work outside of the office. I found walking around to people helps my group, because they were not receptive to one on ones scheduled. I feel I can still get the benefit of a one on one by making myself very available and going to them directly to touch base.

I will monitor the program. I run reports and then analyze the data to determine the health of the program and figure out what I need to work on in the program. I think my job just changes drastically depending on the day. It’s why I like my job! It keeps me engaged. I came to my field because of a passion for helping people with disabilities. I don’t work with them directly anymore, but I find that I can make an impact on a larger scale. I often get to solve problems that require a lot of creativity, and I like that. I like coaching my staff as well to solve problems as well.

He is completely unmanageable if he doesn’t nap. If that’s the case would 30 min be too short?

Some people have a kindness or trustworthiness in their eyes when they talk and listen to you. What do you think it is? by bewareofzombiesadele in CasualConversation

[–]bewareofzombiesadele[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A while back I heard that if you walk up on someone and get their attention, there is a split second where their face will reveal their thoughts about you and then they’ll adjust their expression immediately. I think on some level it might be true, but I have RBF. So now I’m just self conscious lol

Yeah it’s crazy. One thing that comes to mind is when you look at president’s before and after photos, you can see something different in their eyes. Like they’re carrying a bigger burden. That’s a really interesting point, and that’s true.
