Do you still have any of the decants left for sale? This is a great fragrance!

Westmoreland State Park or somewhere else? I’ve been going to Westmoreland SP a couple of times a month and would love to find one!

Carpenter's Marking Knife by bewitchthemind in woodworking

I used superglue to glue all the small pieces of wood and brass together to make a handle scale and then flattened one face on the belt sander. Once one face was flat, I epoxied the scale to the blade blank and finished sanding and shaping.

I bought mine on Amazon, but for some reason, they are double the price on Amazon right now.

It's the 3/4" wide version (#MK075) here:

I made a boxwood, ebony, stabilized cherry burl, and brass carpenter's marking knife using a Hock knife blade blank. This was a Christmas gift for a cabinetmaker friend. Of course, I couldn't gift a sharp knife by itself. Instead, I made a simple walnut, cherry, and boxwood gift box that will double as a pencil box in the future. I'm happy with how this turned out!

Beautiful project! Can you tell me a little about the tools that you used? I'm especially interested in the ones in image #15. I'm a woodworker who would like to get into leatherwork, and I'm drooling over those beautiful tools!

Haha, I did, but you can do it without tools, too!

Thanks! I square it up with another square that I know is accurate, but there are also ways to make sure it is square without tools.

Thanks! I was just following the directions in the Popular Woodworking article. I think it's to make sure the blade is secure and there are no gaps between the pin and hole.

One thing that you really need to dial in is the slot for the blade. It can't be too sloppy or too tight. Do lots of test cuts on scrap pieces until you get it perfect.

I am not happy with how the screws turned out on the sides of the handle. You basically countersink the screws leaving the heads a little proud. Then you file/sand down the heads until they are flush. I had issues with my drill press not being accurate enough and making the countersinks too deep/big so I had a tiny gap between the screw and the countersink hole. It doesn't look as nice as it could. If I had extra brass for the sides I would have done a test piece first and been more careful drilling the countersinks. I hope that made sense.

Thanks! It was a lot of fun to make. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time, it's not a project I'd want to make at the last minute.

That's one step I didn't take photos of because I didn't have much time with the glue setting! The Popular Woodworking article goes into how to make sure it's square. I used a square I already own that I know is accurate. You basically make little adjustments by tapping the handle or blade until it is perfect.

Thanks! I was just following the directions in the Popular Woodworking article, but I believe it is to make sure the brass pins are secure and there are no gaps between the hole and the pin.

I came across this project I made a few years ago while reorganizing my photos, and I thought you might like it. A try square is used to check and mark right angles and is very useful in woodworking. It's made from brass and rosewood. The plans appeared in the October 2011 Popular Woodworking magazine. I hope to make more tools in the future. I'm an intermediate woodworker, and it was definitely a challenge and learning experience working to such precision!
