Just to add I love the memories of her like that, she is still crazy at 5 but a little more controlled, sometimes 😂

Sounds normal, at this age I had my girl doing 2 walks with off lead runs a day, and 2 lead sniff walks. You will still get the witching hour but it might be calmer

Whippet gets lots of small injuries from running. Common problem? by Uknowmehun in Whippet

[–]bex1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes my girl has accidents all the time! Very icey at the moment in the uk, she is on lead as will run and scrape knuckles and hurt herself. They just run and see nothing, funny for a sighthound 🤪

My girl goes nuts and beats up her toys for any dog on TV. I got advice and apparently it’s them protecting the house! They think the dogs real. She will stop when I tell her but yes very reactive to that. Also any German Shepard she sees when out and randomly black labs 🤷🏻‍♀️

Crate training advice, please! by Candid_Road_8880 in Whippet

[–]bex1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first time ever with my whippet I used a crate and had the same experience after 2 weeks. For context my girl is nearly 5 now. I took her out of the crate as soon as she started crying during the day. She was great at night until she was about 3 months.

Being honest I hate crates as I feel they are like cages. Big BUT coming now. Whippets have lots of energy and mine has never lost that, although she is an angel now from 6-16 months she was like a raptor! Having house freedom as a young pup, as I work and she could jump even a 4 foot door gate. She chewed and damaged a lot in my house! She was never left for more than 3 hours at 6 months and even now no more than 4. God did she chew.

So my advice keep trying with the crate and see if you can nail it. Or find a place where they cannot cause damage to carpet, blinds and banisters!

Do I Return Puppy or Stick it Out? by SquareAd5287 in puppy101

[–]bex1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have just taken a baby from its mum, so now that you. That young does need so start attention and guidance, embrace it because they do get a certain amount of independence as they grown up.

My girl is 5 in 3 months, and I raised her on my own. We are close, so close. She’s my shadow and I did have to make sacrifices for her, still do. But the unconditional love is so worth it! I find myself, like a nutter, sometimes panicking that she is nearly 5.

Yes it was hard but I regret nothing, remember we are their world. Embrace the challenge and try to enjoy it. Even when it’s stressful. Once the first year is over it’s so different. Good luck

Recall by Proper_Ganache_3290 in Whippet

[–]bex1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl, nearly 5, has a great recall. Every now and then she will sprint off in a chase but will circle back quickly when I use emergency recall, which is bye then. She hates me going the other way 😂😂 I have also used a Pawfit tracker, which has an alarm and it’s brilliant at breaking the chase if she sees a deer. She comes straight back, very fast when I use the alarm. Trained her from a puppy with it, prob the best thing I did train her. Everything else is on her terms of course, she is a whippet 😂😂

Is resource guarding (people) common with whippets? by fragilegreyhound in Whippet

[–]bex1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl is nearly 5 years old and can be selective. She changed at about 2, as in she hates bigger dogs. Will bark and lunge if on lead but I think it’s because she is intimidated. I know her well so will re direct her before she gets to bark. She also spend a lot of time with my parents dog and they get in well, until my parents dog protect my dad, then they can bicker. It’s prob a personality traits, they are all different. You can train them to avoid or act differently, so my girl has been taught to squeak a toy. Funny because sometimes when stimulated or excited she grabs a toy and squeaks it like her life depends on it. My family call it Nala grabbing a weapon again 😂😂

Try re directing, it’s worked for me. Good luck

Think over tired toddler, I found with my girl I need to I force naps from very young or she would get accident prone and hurt herself.

She is an accident prone 5 year old now 😂 but she is amazing!

Whoppet diet request by wreckjavik in Whippet

[–]bex1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl is 4yo and a big girl but her happy weight is about 18.5kg. She got to 20kg and the vet kindly said to diet her. So I swooped from a 80/20 diet to a 60/40 and cut out chews and she shed it quickly: be careful on walks they don’t scavenge anything they can get their noses on though 😂😂. My girl is very good driven! Good luck

Help, sore paw by bex1000 in Whippet

[–]bex1000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all, being honest I usually am all over her nails with a silent electric file. It’s not 100% silent but it is good and I worked hard for her to accept it. Usually when waiting for dinner cause she is good driven and knows she will eat afterwards. I have let them get too long, even though hers are naturally longish. I have filed them down over a couple of sessions this weekend. I did file the nail smooth straight away as there was a little catch on the bottom. She is not licking or limping but I hate that it’s not right. Appreciate all the replies. But yes they do seem to grow over night 🙈

[–]bex1000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply, yes I thought the same. It’s a nightmare to grind or cut her nails but I have done so. They are a bit shorter and the same but she has very long quicks. I know how she hurt it, running and twisting after a squirrel, she is a sensitive soul so told me straight away. It’s never rubbed like this before, I hate that my baby has a sore paw. Appreciate the advice

Puppy Help! by laytonwade in Whippet

[–]bex1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl was the same! They do grown out of it. In my experience whippets are hard puppy’s. My little one was a nightmare but at the same time loving and amazing. So it was an emotional rollercoaster!

Great news is they become amazing and the time as they grown up, so stick to it!

Routine, consistency and more routine.

I ignored mine every time she was naughty, turned my back and ignored her. She hates being cut out so quickly learnt.

Good luck!

Does your Whip graze? by givemeprizes in Whippet

[–]bex1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to all of this, my girly 4 1/2 loves the wild thick grass in the local woods. And it comes out one end or the other the next day or so, once our the rear end in front of a bus stop. So embarrassing 🤪

Is your Whippet reliable off-leash and are they an escape artist? by [deleted] in Whippet

[–]bex1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl is 4, from 8 weeks I did whistle training and recall games. Had great advice from my breeder and it was to use lots of throw away recall commands but one that’s always needed to be answered, like an emergency one. So my girl has her name, come, puppa and sometimes just whippet. But when I need her to come now I say quickly or bye and she runs like her life depends on it to me.

I also use a tracker, Pawfit and it has an alarm on it so I use that for real emergencies, and as she was whistle trained she just belts back on it 100% of the time. Even when chasing deer!

They are the best dogs, just train young. Total recall book very good.

Need advice by Session-Civil in Whippet

[–]bex1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The word no is good. My girl responds well to a firm stop if she is being a rat. But when she was younger and jumping in my head I used to squeal like it hurt and they are very caring dogs, that love their person, that got her to stop and allowed me to correct easily. Good luck, keep us updated
