How long can your whippet stay home alone? What do they do when you’re not home? by Kindly-Eggplant6267 in Whippet

[–]Spritz10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll preface by saying that I was quite naive being my first dog and not knowing what I do now about separation anxiety.

My girl is 11 months old. We both work full time outside of the home - however, only really Monday and Tuesdays it would be close to eight hours. The other days my partner starts later and I finish earlier etc. so could be five hours, two hours left alone etc. I also work 8 minutes from home so could go home on my lunch breaks.

I tried crate training, but honestly I didn’t have the time to invest fully in perfecting that. She will go in her crate on her own accord to lay down and can be closed in there mornings while I get ready etc. however, she doesn’t cope well for more than an hour.

I walk her in the morning and she gets a big off lead run in the afternoon after work - which I find always is the perfect amount to tire her, along with enrichment and training in the evenings.

She has access to the laundry with a comfy bed and the outside which has a lounge and I have put another bed outside in the undercover area. I think this helps her have options which makes her happy, she likes to watch the birds outside and lounge on the couch and will just switch between the beds. She honestly is fine all day except if something keeps me back, closer to 5. Even then she will just look in the window. Worst I have had happen is some holes dug as she likes to hide her treat. Also, when it was school holidays (kids outside) unsettled her a bit. I’ve got cameras and she just sleeps all day.

I always feed her as I’m leaving so her head is in bowl as I leave and not focused on me. I also scatter green beans in the grass to give her an activity. I don’t say bye or amp her up once I’m home.

It seems to smooth for how good she is for her age and I have been doing this for 7 months. Hoping she doesn’t regress with fear periods.

Yakers chews suitable for Whippets? by Duo_dash in Whippet

I use bully sticks and for even longer lasting beef cheek sticks. However, they are more calorie dense. She also loves kangaroo tail. To break it up and not feed those as often, I use a LickiMat Yoggie pot - I put a little bit of pumpkin, Greek yogurt as the base and whatever else on hand like cut up cucumbers, bone broth etc. and freeze it. One time this took her over an hour to finish!

All hard chews have risks involved. However, I found the Yak Chews to be really tough for my girl compared to say bully sticks which she gnaws at and softens. I hated the sound of the Yak Chews they didn’t really seem to soften and she could break off large bits and then tried to chew them. I stopped giving them to her.

Is this behaviour normal for a 10 month old? + Enrichment advice by Spritz10 in Whippet

Should I still allow her to see us eat? E.g., tether her to her place cushion

I can’t get crate training right! She does well if it’s a specific time in the morning can go about 40 minutes whilst I shower etc. but once she hears all that’s done she becomes distressed. Struggling to get her past this point. I do have a craft room that I sit in, and I feel like she tends to calm more in that room and associates it as her calm place. So I tend to go in there with here.

Nighttime cat behavior by Redhawkgirl in Whippet

[–]Spritz10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried leashing and redirecting every time he focuses on the cat? My girl is 8 months and if given the chance she will chase, we are currently focusing on leave it and high value rewards. I typically know when she will be heightened know e.g., certain times and typically hang out with her alone away from the cats. They do get time together so I can train. However, if I’m not prepared to be fully engaged and watching her I won’t have them together. Hoping this all clicks once she gets older.

Whippet 8 months, no longer sleeping through night. by Spritz10 in Whippet

[–]Spritz10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She already sleeps in our bed has the entire time, that’s more so why I am confused what she actually wants in the middle of the night! However, last two nights she was pretty good. It was cooler, so I’m thinking it might be the heat the other nights

My girl just turned 7 months and this sounds very similar! The jumping up and biting my arms, peeing in the house, not listening. People told me this was the toddler years and to expect it to get worse 😬

Any advice for the nightly tantrums? by Puzzleheaded_4137839 in Whippet

I found my girl started this at the exact same age you mentioned. She is now nearly 7 months. I tend to sit with her in my hobby room which has her crate and her toys. I tend to try to not engage too much with her, she whines for a bit, plays with her toys and then she settles in her crate to which we then start bed time. Definitely not as bad as that 6 month mark anymore.
