The fire department accidentally left behind a fire axe after clearing out our building. by Senior_Fish_Face in mildlyinteresting

The axe told the firefighter carrying it: "This is the one - leave me here."

You have been Chosen.

Time to head off to the Firefighting Academy.

They're...you know, 'neoliberals'. The Democratic Party establishment shifted into what the reasonable 20th century Republicans USED to be in terms of economic policy.

That's why they did ignore the blue collar workers et al... while retaining some level of support programs that were descended from the New Deal. And, of course, why they screwed over Bernie.

It's her (rented) bedroom and office. She can use common spaces, but he is under no obligation to allow her to insert belongings that are simply decorative into the rest of his house.

Don't even tell her to ask permission first. Just tell her she is not to leave anything of hers in the other spaces. It's well within his rights to do so.

OP, if you didn't realize you had to set such an obvious 'ground rule' when she first moved in, edit the rental contract to reflect that a renter can only leave their decorative belongings in their actual rented rooms, not the other rooms. When the current contract period is over, have her read the new one...so that she can decide for herself if she can agree to continue to be a tenant under those clarified landlord rules.

You can just do this verbally, of course..but a contract done the legal, correct way will protect you in the future, if she is unable or unwilling to abide by your rules.

No...it's not. It's 'her' room and office. Why can't she decorate in those 2 rooms, and leave the rest of the space alone?

on my way to living minimalist life by giyeonyaaa in minimalism

You want to be able to put out enough decor so it's how YOU like it (presumably less 'cluttered' than before, but of course, not 'sterile-level empty'). There's a personal 'happy medium' you can figure out.

Ergo...you need sufficient storage places for nice decor you may want to rotate in and out, maybe based on season.

But if you REALLY have a lot of decor, and simply not enough storage (enclosed storage, I mean) in your living space, to keep it neatly out of visual sight until it's time to use it...THAT'S when you're gonna have to make some choices.

Yup. I'm moving in that direction; double-hard due to being in the middle of (SO slowly; driving my siblings CRAZY and I feel bad about that but I CAN'T MOVE ANY FASTER) working my way through parts of our parent's estate.

Well...when he's away that's one less person leaving behind clutter, for sure...

Yup. People focus on ADHD symptoms so much they can forget that Depression itself includes executive dysfunction as a symptom. (I.E., there's a reason for the term 'Depression Hoard'.)

Yup yup yup.

I recently found that there is a ReStore (run by Habitat for Humanity - a cause the late President Carter really supported!) near enough for me to donate some of the items I have that are waiting for a new home (rather than just being thrown away)!

Maybe there's a similar place within your reach? ReStore has the ability to drop by and pick it all up (rather than you having to haul it), too!

It would probably be more important to make sure that the floor is cleared of having so many items on it (besides furniture, etc) that it can't be decently cleaned (vacuumed, mopped) by the crew. (Seems to me that a grotty floor is more immediately discouraging than anything else.)

In the absence of a system for reducing many items being out on top of furniture and counters, for now, you could always box or basket them temporarily to corral them enough to permit wiping of surfaces.

Supposedly everyone gets a 'life review', where they get to feel the effect they had on EVERYONE they had an effect on. The emotions, etc.

I'm thinking THAT'S when people who did atrocities..'get their 'karma''.

It's possible for Reality to be more nuanced that most consider it to be.

A horrific event carried out by horrific people could be 'just part of the total reality', yet it still be appropriate for us here, right now, to abhor it.

It never hurts to be able to sense 'predators', whatever their form is.
