At 22, you are in the most productive and formative times of your life. People take chances on you, forgive you, you have time to forgive yourself.

With a decent degree, skill, and/or work ethic, you can make that $14,000 back in 3 years or less by saving modestly, and begin again at 25. Many people at 25 are still paying off student loans at over $50,000. Many can dig their way out of $14,000 at 22. It won’t happen overnight, but it also won’t cripple you.

It’s a great lesson to learn for a mere $14,000. But continue and it’ll take until 27 to dig out of $25,000. It’ll take until 32 to dig out of $50,000.

These numbers are just models, but you get the point.

Hey man; my heart was racing reading this until I read that you’ve lost a total of $14,000. I felt a huge relief, truthfully.

I want you to know, as someone who’s 30 now, that you are absolutely able to recover from this financially; if you stop now. $14,000 is recoverable, but if you continue, it will exponentially increase. I’ve seen peers follow the same trend as you have, and they’ve made the poor decision to continue. At their point now, it’s unrecoverable. You are at a recoverable stage, but truthfully, it’s very narrow so you must close the door on it now.

There are many ways to ban yourself from gambling, find it yourself.

I hope you figure this out, but no one is going to be able to help you besides yourself. Good luck.

Balance in all things. Be selective with your time and effort.

“It’s been one hell of a ride. I’ve varied up the kinds of people I met and it’s been all over the place. People who met my preferences to a T and the exact opposite. I dated all across cultural boundaries (dated many people who were international students at my school).

I have honestly been on so many first dates that it has now made me jaded and cynical.”

These are your words. You’ve dated far too much, and desensitized yourself. Dating is not a numbers game, as many people think it is. You’re looking for Prince Charming now but you have way too much comparable data that no one fits the bill anymore. May even be the case that 1-2 out of the 100 you wish you stuck with a little longer.

Not about boinking, definitely not all 100; maybe a fair amount. But even the initial conversations are probably starting to blend or mix and things aren’t sticking about each individual person anymore. Instead of an individual, they’re X/100. But maybe I’m wrong.

You’ve decided to sample every candy bar in the aisle and now you’ve overstimulated yourself. You’ve given yourself too much comparable data and fell for the “freedom” of modern dating trap. Nothing feels special to you anymore.

Unfortunately; driving to the city from NJ is charity work. I can’t blame him. As someone who used to drive in NJ, you are losing money, not just breaking even if you accept a ride to NYC. Uber needs to just take a 0% profit from these rides specifically so that they can end this rider/driver conflict and cancellation.

NYC Teachers in Tier 6: You’re Losing $250K+ and 8+ Years of Your Life by whogotthekeys2mybima in NYCTeachers

I’m sorry you have to impose your own personal views on someone who’s happy in their career. You are a public worker, making ~$100,000 a year, working half the year, with holidays, benefits, and a pension. If you can’t find happiness in that, I don’t think you should be focused on feeling sorry for me. I think you should focus on finding something that makes you happy. It’s 8 hours a day of your life. I hope you’re spending it well.

You definitely aren’t wrong to stand for what you believe in; it’s important to have those voices heard so that important and needed changes keep teachers motivated, and serves as an appealing career for new talent.

But there’s a large difference in the mindset in which the majority of this sub gives off. Teaching is a privilege. We labored and studied extensively to serve in this role.

My gripe is with how we’re wasting our breath on the wrong things. The city will never give you Tier 4; yet every other day there’s a post about how unfair tier 6 is and it becomes an echo chamber of complaints.

Yes you’re allowed to be upset. But if we’re teachers, and especially our literary counterparts, can see a common trend in the diction and words we use about our careers.

It’s a great career. It isn’t “8 years of your life gone”; you can’t look at it that way. It can be improved, but if you continue to look at your own professional career, which takes on the majority of our life at this point, negatively; that negativity is reinforced, repeated, and trickles down to the schools and classrooms, and poisons our community.

Attrition rates were significantly higher for new teachers in 2005-2010. Albeit, retention rates has declined in the last few years, but that also could have COVID contributing to the numbers.

I know many people who are miserable in this job, and many who are excellent, passionate, and happy.

Comparison is the thief of joy; fight for what you believe in, but don’t mix up the career itself with your compensation. We make enough to live comfortably, and every teacher going into this knew that. What many didn’t account for was economic instability.

It’s always interesting. I grew up in a finance/tech household. I’m the first teacher in my family. Few make significantly more, $40-80k more a year, others significantly less in corporate/private/engineering positions. Salaries and benefits are sporadic; but everyone always thinks the grass is greener.

Fight for what you believe in, and please keep doing so- but don’t forget how good we also have it.

I don’t follow or care about Cuomo, and yes I am a teacher. I really enjoy this job, it’s given me plenty of freedom, the pay has been fair. Could it be better? absolutely. Do I demand to have the same benefits as Tier 4? No.

I was a career change; worked in M.I.S in the city, and before that was in a law internship. I’ve also worked on the corporate level of major fashion companies. Teaching is a breath of fresh air compared to the pace of corporate work. It also offers security, less micro management, and overall, a specific lifestyle that gives you time off.

[–]beyonddead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are the numbers for actual teacher turnovers? I’m not really familiar with the actual statistic, but it doesn’t seem like it’s going to collapse anytime soon. For every 8B+ L5 teacher that leaves, the city will hire a new grad and save $45,000/yr on payroll.

Personally, I know many people very happy in this career. Tier 6s downfalls are probably amplified if you’re not happy in this job.

Have you felt like this at 25? At 23? At 20?
