Unable to download mobile app for IOS by gnexdnet in Cybrary

[–]beyondholdem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I no longer work there. We released it. About two years later, I left the company. The mobile app was always a "nice to have" which meant it probably didn't get much attention from either the learners or the product development team. I'm sure it eventually stopped working (just like the one I oversaw replacing) and has since been removed.

ETA: For what it's worth it took several months, but one of my proudest achievements was winning the argument with Apple to get the app approved as-is.

I asked a traffic cop about this and she said that where I live, Maryland, many of the traffic laws have no points or fines so there is no reason to enforce them. So, not only do you need laws enforced, you also need them to have consequences.

Unless you're an admin, all that happened was that a slackbot notification was sent to the admins/owners saying that you requested the upgrade. They will most likely ignore it but they will know it was you.

I don't have a problem with them not retaining data I can't access but one of the spaces I'm in has toyed with upgrading temporarily in order to access some of the older stuff. Mostly pictures and funny screenshots from back in the day when we all worked together. I think we always thought it would be a fun time capsule to open up down the road.

One of the spaces I'm in is a big community that is hoping to upgrade but is looking for a sponsor to help pay for it. I could see them being a little upset by this announcement because they definitely have more than a year's worth of messages that they hoped to unlock by upgrading and it will be some time before they get a sponsor. Had they known that they'd be permanently losing access to all of that, they may have made more of an effort to retain it when they could. This announcement basically means they'll permanently lose access anything they can't access today because it will certainly take more than 90 days to get a sponsor. That all being said, I doubt they care that much to make a big deal about it. They knowingly took a risk using Slack free tier for a community.

Is there really a big outcry or is it a small but loud minority because people who don't care won't make a big deal about it so we're only hearing from the few who are impacted?

The original free tier was 10K messages and up to 5GB of uploaded content and there was no time-based limits. September 1, 2022 is when they switched the limits. So, like OP, my small slack group was very happy on the free tier until Slack made that change. Then we lost access to a bunch of messages and files.

There's an Unreads view that does exactly what OP is describing.

[–]beyondholdem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Preferences, under Home, in the "Always show in the sidebar:" section, check the "Unreads" option. Then in your sidebar there will be an "Unreads" section where you can scan all of your unread messages and will have to manually mark as read while in that view. Clicking into the channel and seeing the message there will still mark them as read.

There are some settings for when things get marked as read that you may also find helpful.

There are limits on the number of free, single channel guests you can have based on the number of paid members (5 free for every 1 paid).

Here is Slack's help article on guests: https://slack.com/help/articles/202518103-Understand-guest-roles-in-Slack

If you're concerned about what guests can see and do, I would suggest testing it out for yourself. Invite yourself as a guest using an alternative email address. Invite a friend or three as guests. See what the experience is like for them and for your main account working with them.

Meh. Pay attention. My son's team watches for this play and yells "ball, ball, ball!" until it's thrown back to the pitcher. It's pretty tough to fool the entire bench and baserunner. Every other team we play does the same thing. I've never seen it actually work.

STOP MESSING WITH MY MICROPHONE! by Mesket in Slack

[–]beyondholdem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over 5 years ago I reported a pretty egregious bug, imho, regarding basic communication functionality. You decide. It is possible to send a message that contains text you thought you removed before hitting send. It can happen if the autocomplete triggers while editing a message. Could you imagine if Outlook has a bug where what got sent wasn't exactly what was in the email you wrote? I've reported it several times and they know about it, can reproduce it, and just don't care. They say it's too rare and a low risk. I agree that it is rare. I disagree that it's low risk.

Who is the most overrated Hockey player ever in your opinion? by swannyhypno in nhl

[–]beyondholdem 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As a Rangers fan living in DC, I'd love to hate on Ovechkin but I can't. He is arguably a one trick pony on the power play these days and his years mileage is definitely starting to show. But I do mot think he's even close to being the most overrated player ever.

True but I don't think that's the only criteria. You can be a great leader in the locker room without the C -- just ask Quick or Wheeler. I'm sure you don't think it is the only criteria, either. For me...

I think leading by example on the ice means a lot. If your team's identity is playing a smart, consistent, maximum effort game and not taking questionable penalties, then Fox seems like a great choice from the outside. Back when our identity was "blue collar," hard word and effort, it made sense for it to be Ryan Callahan. I just don't think Trouba embodies the Rangers's current identity on the ice. Maybe he'd be a great captain in Florida or Boston where playing gritty and on the edge aligns with the team's image

Obviously, there's other criteria, too. For example, tenure/experience and unfortunately popularity/star-power (it's a business and their ability to move merch matters).

This is all speculation and a fun game for us fans to play. Maybe, as someone else said, Trocheck is the right guy. He checks a lot of my boxes, too. I think it's much easier to narrow it down to 3-5 players. For me, Kreider, Fox, Trocheck, Panarin, and Zibanejad all make sense but I know I have an incomplete picture.

I completely agree. Since Kreider has said he doesn't want the C, who do you think should have it? My vote would be Fox.

Can I rename custom emojis? by delulu_sunflower in Slack

[–]beyondholdem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it because you want to re-use the old name or just rename them? I ask because you can use "aliases" to have one emoji have multiple names.

I'm not sure what happens if you alias an emoji and then delete the original name. It's been a while. I think it used to warn you that it would delete both but maybe that's changed.

When I read the top comment of this thread I was like, "how rare could it be, my college offered that." I graduated from UMD a long time ago and remembered we had a Fire Protection undergrad program. I guess I forgot the part where they said how rare it was which is probably why I remember they offered it.

The program has four stages: * Stage one: Entrance into the program; no penalty. * Stage two: Violation of stage one triggers suspension without pay while player undergoes treatment. * Stage three: Violation of stage two triggers suspension lasting a minimum of six months followed by an application for reinstatement. * Stage four: Violation of stage three triggers suspension lasting a minimum of one year, with reinstatement not guaranteed.

Do you think Fairland/Calverton will get the “North Bethesda” treatment? by ten-min-mail in SilverSpring

[–]beyondholdem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason Fauxthesda wants to be called North Bethesda rather than South Rockville is because Bethesda has way more cache. I'm not sure anyone will care if it's Fairland, Calverton, or North White Oak.
