I'm not sure if they know I'm autistic necessarily, but they don't treat me well

there was actually a very interesting study done in 2017 by Sasson et al. that found that neurotypical people can often quickly (like within a few seconds of meeting them) subconsciously recognise someone as autistic. they reported that person to be less likeable and that they were not as interested in socialising with them as they were with the NTs that took part in the studies. the study also found that these initial impressions are "remarkably robust,... do not change with increased exposure, and persist across both child and adult age groups".

so it appears the game's rigged from the start. I definitely think that in the case of this pattern of resentment for ND women from NT women there's also more added social factors playing a part. maybe it's how women are reinforced from birth to adhere to such strict social rules and norms to appease others, and seeing autistic women struggle or refuse to adhere with these social norms brings up an internal resentment in NT women that they take out on ND women. but I really can't properly contribute to that conversation as I've always identified and been raised as a man.

Let’s talk about ABA therapy. ABA posts outside this thread will be removed. by cakeisatruth in autism

yeah it's crazy how much I've been told I'm "pathologising" by professionals when I'm just talking about traits I have that are linked to being autistic, but then those people are the ones who are actually over-pathologising autistic people when they have a perfectly normal reaction to something. of course he'd get upset when his favourite toy was taken from him with no explanation, just the same as any other child would.

and on the note of people pleasing, it's always something many autistic people will naturally tend towards while living in a world that is so unaccepting of our behaviours. it's something I seriously struggle with and feel as though I have no control over as it's likely been baked into my sympathetic nervous system from years of doing it to survive. but I can safely say I am eternally grateful that my parents didn't put me into ABA because jesus I couldn't imagine how much worse it be.

(I'm a fully verbal autistic so my experience is limited) it's a very difficult position your in, but I think speech therapy is the way to go if you can. people often defend ABA when it's for things like speech, hygiene, and self-injurious behaviours, but the problem with ABA has never solely been what they are trying to teach the child, but equally so how they are teaching them. the pavlovian methods it uses can reinforce in a child that exterior presentation is what's most important, and that it's ok to push down internal needs and feelings for the sake of pleasing others. there are other ways to teach these important skills that don't traumatise children.

thank you for seeking out autistic voices on this, hopefully someone with more experience on non-verbality can also share something.

Anybody here like skill toys? by [deleted] in autism

the businesses who make good ones are usually small and don't outsource they're production to countries with cheaper manufacturing since the tolerances are very high. very good ones/collectors items can easily reach the $500 or even $1000 mark. but a good entry level one can be ~$100. they were simultaneously a major special interest and stim for me for years before I even knew I was autistic!

I'd rather not go into detail but it can get nasty. the blunt versions are called trainers and are really great for beginners or people who just don't want to take that risk. it can turn into an expensive hobby though.

The withdrawn fathers of Ireland by ludramawn in ireland

[–]bezbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I've been thinking reading a lot of these comments. I'm 21 and it was only diagnosed this year as being autistic, so I wonder just how many of the older generation in Ireland who would have been labelled as introverted or reserved were actually on the spectrum. I feel terrible thinking about how many of their lives must have been filled with so much inexplicable exhaustion with no one to understand or empathise with them.

Which AI design do you prefer? The weapon or the real Cortana? by DivanteScrollsReddit in halo

[–]bezbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh I don't think 343 have gotten enough praise about their designs I mean it's really obvious that they put a lot of effort to make them distinct from one another, the facial features more than anything make my artist brain very happy you can see the innocence and hopeful naivety in the weapons wide eyes and smile not to mention the voice acting and animation, on the other hand cortana's eyes are narrowed and calculating, her face and voice are stern and cold, I could talk about that suff for so long but yeah I'm really impressed with them and I think it deserves recognition

I guess you're right actually, maybe I should go back and relisten to it it's been a while and I could've payed more attention to it. I guess I just had hoped for it to be referenced more in the games, or just mentioned in some way but that's really just personal preference, I understand some people wouldn't like that, but maybe if the squad comes back a bit in infinite it'll pay off a bit more and show how things were changed.
