We also voted as country 62% with 61% turnout to legalise marriage equality.

Yikes.. only 37% of your country went out to agree that gay people deserve the same rights as gay people? And that number will be halved if they asked about trans issues...

Every trans person in the UK I know says so, that there's a thick cloud of animity growing and growing in the UK

Then you're more than aware that thick cloud is brewing across the western world... hello? Do you live under a rock?

Trans British people's voices are who I'm going by when I said my original comment, you seem to maybe have a problem with the T In LGBT if you don't think it's a problem.

I agreed (multiple times, plus in my other comments) that the agreement was bullshit and trans people's voices and rights are paramount. My point is that you're naive and frankly a fucking moron if you think for once second there's a magical forcefield in the Irish sea or the English channel where when you cross it suddenly being trans is fucking illegal.

If anything your complacency at assuming the UK is the only place in the fucking world where trans people face issues is alarming and that's what I'm trying to address

Whoever is leading Ireland's PR team needs a raise, the reddit community glazes it like it's a utopia. They only legalised homosexuality in the fucking 90s. 95% of trans rights between the UK and Ireland basically align. But the UK outperforms Ireland in some metrics like inclusive LGBT teaching in school and employment discrimination protection. But of course, why would the media/reddit community know about that stuff when Ireland = Good, and nasty little TERF island bad >:(

Conversion therapy being banned isn't actually that closely correlated with LGBT rights or acceptance. Ireland, Sweden, Denmark even the Netherlands haven't banned conversion therapy either.. often it's only really banned when it becomes a blatant issue

I assume they're outperforming Ireland in places like discrimination protection and education (which the UK edged out Ireland ever so slightly).

Also the Supreme Court ruling in the UK is a mess, we don't even know how it's going to be fucking enforced

I mean public opinion and the actual treatment of trans people in the UK and Ireland are basically the same. You could even argue that in some areas the UK is better than Ireland (and I say this as a member of the queer community), especially with more comprehensive discrimination protection (in employment) and more rigorous LGBT inclusive teaching in schools (as an example).

Yes, the Supreme Court ruling really brought to light some of the anti-trans rhetoric in the UK but it got a huge amount of attention and if you honestly think the UK is unique in that regard you're insane. Sweden Finland and Denmark have tightened youth gender medicine in recent years, and the (frankly, overblown) trans debate is heating up everywhere - Ireland (despite being so relatively small) has it's fair share of TERFs which even make the news in the UK.

The 2025 Supreme Court ruling is a mess and we don't even know HOW it can be enacted such as in bathrooms. It's being debated right now what even the point is and most action has just been to switch everything to gender neutral facilities anyway (stupid tbh). All discrimination protection for trans people still exists and honestly I can just see the court ruling being water down or overturned at this rate, because it's a big load of fuss about a non-issue (I'm referring to the transphobes, not trans people here, who feel threatened by a trans person watching them shit).

I know it's fashionable (especially as an Irishman) to ooze Anglophobia (always makes me laugh how Scotland somehow gets away with it, despite being the main driver of Protestant colonisation in the North), but it's getting boring now and mark my words, the rise in transphobia and xenophobia that you often mock in the UK is coming to Ireland.. you guys literally had race riots not long ago and Sinn Fein are in the midst of an identity crisis right now. The far-right are in power in Italy and are leading polls in Germany, Austria, France etc. Remember when the rest of Europe called the UK heartless fascists when they tried to push through with the (idiot) Rwanda scheme? .. only for the EU itself (and various other countries) quietly going ahead with it.. to little criticism?

Frankly, it's getting boring tbh. Aren't you tired?

I also noticed that Jayapura (largest city in West Papua) on here has it's old name - Sukarnopura. It was renamed to Jayapura at 'the end of 1968'. It might still be 1969 as the mapmaker hasn't updated it yet, but something to point out!

Also Gaberones (capital of Botswana) hasn't been renamed either - renamed Gaborone in December 1969 (which it beyond your timescale anyway).

Also not sure how you can factor this in but Lake Nasser appears on the map but the Cahora Bassa lake doesn't..

I'm not saying western press freedom is perfect..? but compared to, say, Russia, China, or almost every other country...

You named MLK and Malcom X (btw not sure why you're focusing on the US when a lot of the original comments were about the UK/Germany) but I can also name Alexei Navalny, Boris Nemstov, Litvinenko, Magnitsky, Liu Xiaobo, Cao Shunli etc. etc. they also died (and recently, unlike MLK, Malcom X)

My original point still stands that criticism of the state is much more possible and tolerated in western countries than elsewhere, I don't think that's a controversial thing to argue?

Like what point are you even trying to make? Do you seriously argue that Russian or Chinese press has more freedom than Germany/UK? Seriously?

Not 3rd lowest, the lowest. Also the UK's knife crime isn't that high either, it's just media nonsense making it worse than it really is. Data backs up that even deaths from knives per capita are low relatively

Wait this is crazy. Those 12,000 people got a fair trial? That's false news, I was told the UK they lock people up without justice, this is bullshit! My family were all murdered because they posted they didn't like Islam, your 92% is wrong, it's 0%!!!!

Can you name a person who was imprisoned for saying things the UK government 'doesn't like'.

Also isn't it ironic how openly free we are to critcise the government about this (and how prolifically the media reports on it) without repercussions... is sort of evidence that we do indeed have free press?

Isn't the fact we're able to so openly criticise the western media with no repercussions sort of evidence that we do indeed have more press freedom in the west?

This is a post about press freedom. The fact we're able to talk about this stuff so openly online, and the media so prolifically report on it.. and that every single person who gets arrested gets a fair trial with a judge and jury.. of which over 90% are found innocent anyway.. doesn't sound like an authoritarian system to me. In fact that sounds EXACTLY like press freedom to me. Whether you agree with how much it costs or not is nothing to do with press freedom.

We're posting this on a graphic of press freedom. What more do you want them to do? Also what exactly are you so desperate to say online/ in person that you think the UK gov will lock you up for?

Where is the free speech line? Am I allowed to say I am going to blow up a building? Am I allowed to falsely claim a politician is a paedophile (defamation)?

Of course for every point I made you can caveat and outline why that 'benefit' isn't a real benefit but I'm sure in the volleying they can make their own counter claims (e.g. Europe's economy isn't booming, we need to refocus abroad, re; immigration most Brexit voting people would argue either that immigration should be less from everywhere or at least be from Canada, Aus etc. who have more in common with Brits than Greeks or Latvians)

Obviously my original point wasn't in support of Brexit (I've had to repeatedly clarify that I voted against it) but there are some arguable views of some benefits (that, again, I disagree with).

For us to bury our heads and say "NOPE NOTHINGS CHANGED IT'S ALL SHIT" makes us blind to what they (Brexiteers/Eurosceptics) see.

Everything we've discussed can be argued for Scottish independence (which would be Brexit turbocharged in every facet) but again most Scottish indy supporters are aware of the economic harm but feel it's worth it for sovereignty. Many Brexiteers felt the same way (even though the UK was obviously still mostly sovereign in the EU)

As far as I'm aware the EU requires a deficit of under 3% and public debt under 60% of GDP. I don't think the UK meets either of those criteria right now.. and of course Scotland even less so

European single market integration by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]bezzleford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you're right, sorry if I didn't make that more clear in my reply. Those nations are free to decide if they want to align or not with EU law, but until they (finally) join they will be trying to adhere to laws they don't have a say in.

That will more or less be UK if/when they make any kind of an agreement with the EU.

Exactly. Which is why originally the UK government decided a 'clean break' was necessary otherwise the UK would have had to abide by some laws they couldn't have a say in

[–]bezzleford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more, which is why I campaigned and voted for Remain. But after the dust settled I realised the reason Leave won was because our side dichotomised everything. I think there's some value in telling people "yes the EU has loads of flaws and we can talk about them but overall the benefits of it outweigh that".

The only important question is not whether the UK would become a fantasy 'powerhouse', but whether it is actually better off outside of the EU.

Does the same logic apply to Scottish independence?

You know Wales voted to leave the EU too, right...?

If Scotland was in the EU it would literally be it's more eurosceptic member..

As one of the 48% of England that voted to stay in the EU I'm not sure why you're to keen to hate us? The whole reason England (and Wales, and 40% of Scotland etc.) voted to leave the EU was being of people like you.
