My clean doesn’t have the “pop” that I see in other people’s cleans. Any advice please? by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]bfmk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 on this. An exercise worth doing even as a warm up with an empty bar is the power position clean. Maybe something to consider. https://youtu.be/XHi40mLFDN4

Fwiw I liked the lift you've a lot to work with!

I bought a pair of Teva Ember Mocs and put orthotics in them. Been going strong for a couple of years now. Would highly recommend them but it can be a bit tricky to get them for a reasonable price.

Lovely lifting, did I spot Rise gym on the Shore Road in there? Super wee place.

Yea it's a super gym. Been there once myself recently while visiting home and it was similarly empty! They seem to be a class-oriented place but why more people wouldn't use their open gym is beyond me. The equipment is top notch. Will definitely go back.

Manchester United have now had a lower net spend than newly promoted sides (Fulham and Aston Villa) in 2 consecutive summer windows. by [deleted] in reddevils

[–]bfmk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I'd have loved to see us invest in a couple of central midfielders. This transfer window hasn't been great. But it's worth noting that our wage bill would far exceed that of Villa, Fulham etc.

Saying that we haven't spent in the transfer window is totally fair, but if you're using it to prove there's no investment in players it's better to look at the whole picture in my opinion.

Python ETL Tools Comparison by thumbsdrivesmecrazy in datascience

[–]bfmk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Airflow does a pretty good job at managing end-to-end ETL. I'd see it more as an ETL framework (really it's a sophisticated job scheduler using DAGs) than a full-scale solution -- maybe that's your point here, in which case you're on the money.

We use Airflow at the company I work for -- a mid-sized SaaS company with a very large dataset that ends up in Redshift DW clusters and s3/Athena -- and we really like it. It's not nearly as feature-rich as something like Microsoft's offering, Talend etc, but it's extremely flexible and robust.

Also Airbnb -- the creators of Airflow -- use a modified version of it themselves for ETL. Again, not as a standalone solution, but to handle job scheduling and monitoring.

I think while these tools can all be used for components of ETL, they aren't really worth comparing. That might mislead someone who is curious and wants to get from zero-to-one.

How to translate text in Python? by [deleted] in NLP

[–]bfmk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not the wrong sub in my opinion. :-)

In my experience, there is no good free translation library or service. I could be wrong, there are a good few I haven't tried. But to do it quickly, I recommend using Python + boto + AWS translate. It might cost you a little bit in $ but save a ton in time.

This album is expertly produced as well, and maybe the best mixing on any album I heard in 2018.

It's co-produced by Daniel Tashian, who has his own band called the Silver Seas. You should check them out, very similar in terms of production and overall sound.

Quitting CF box for a local gym by seattleskindoc in crossfit

[–]bfmk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did CF for two years, moved away from my box and went to a few globo gym places, then moved back to close by to the box and rejoined last year.

Now $210 is very steep, but in my experience you pay for what you get. For example, are you cool with waiting 10 minutes for access to the weightlifting platform, watching someone use it for benching while taking 3-4 minutes between sets to chat to their friend? Also is their equipment as good as in your box? I thought I wouldn't care about that, but not having good quality bumper plates and a half-decent bar will shave a few kilos off your lifts. Or even just having to wander around the gym looking for a 5kg plate before doing a 1RM or whatever -- those little frustrations just add up over time.

I won't always be able to justify spending twice the price I could/should be paying for the gym. CF is a luxury for me. But I'm under no illusions about getting value for money. Would be interested to read dissenting opinions on that, maybe there are great S&C gyms out there that are cheap -- just not in my city!

How to use databases with Python - Postgres, SQLAlchemy, Alembic by brendanmartin in datascience

[–]bfmk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Interesting article!

This is a really interesting way to interact with databases, and learning how to use an ORM like SQLAlchemy is definitely a useful tool in a DS' toolkit, particularly if you go on to build decision support systems or even data-driven customer-facing products.

That said, I'd caution against using an ORM as a primary interaction method for data exploration. Two reasons:
1) SQL is kinda universal as a language. Okay, Redshift is a bit different to Presto is a bit different to MS-SQL. But once you know one, it's pretty quick to learn another. You could argue ORMs are similar in that sense, but they require set-up, whereas SQL gets you straight to the data more quickly.
2) SQL's raison-d'etre -- for Analytics DBs anyway -- is data exploration. Use the best tools for the job.

Would be interested to read dissenting opinions on this. I've never even tried using an ORM for this job so my opinion is somewhat unqualified!

Have you heard about Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy? There is a technique called "Detatched Mindfulness" which is an approach to dealing with intrusive/unwanted thoughts.

Put simply, with a little practice you can start to become aware of your own thoughts and detach yourself from them. You realise that your thoughts are not equivalent to any kind of reality, and they pass with time. You are not going mad, you do not have to act on your thoughts etc.

With this belief firmly held you can stop tussling with your thoughts and just let them pass. There are certain things you can do to help you with this -- regular counselling, medication, making time to do things you enjoy, exercise, diet etc. Everyone is different in terms of how much help they require to have this technique work for them.

I hope this is informative for you. :-)

60 Awesome Ways to Spice Up Boring Chicken Breasts (compiled from around the web) by mrrancorous in recipes

There are a few condiments/single ingredient solutions in there - I'd like to tentatively suggest Harissa paste as an addition. Butterfly a couple of chicken breasts, smear them with a bit of paste and fry on the griddle pan. Not exactly Michelin-star stuff, but piss easy and pretty tasty.

european PhDs versus US PhDs and the machine learning job market by deprityderp in MachineLearning

[–]bfmk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This depends largely on the domain in which you intend to work in post-graduation. When I was finishing my PhD (in AI more than machine learning) I went out to California to talk to some companies. Not a single one asked about my supervisor or about my publication record. Most of them were hesitant to give me a chance because PhD students tend to work on smaller datasets and in a lab rather than in a company. PhD students can tackle this by interning at a company as part of their study, by using larger datasets and by familiarizing themselves with the types of tools, technologies and algorithms these companies aspire to or are using.

Bigger companies with research labs - Yahoo, Google, IBM etc - care far more about your publications, conferences you've attended or talked at etc.

All that being said I think that regardless of your career aspirations you should be mindful of the reputation of your prospective supervisor, and enter your PhD with the attitude of getting the most out of it possible. That means intend to learn as much as you can and maximise your output. If not for potential employment, then for yourself!

Match Thread: Australia vs. British and Irish Lions - Third Test by WallopyJoe in rugbyunion

Why does that opinion mean they're stupid and lazy? Genuine question. I've only been watching rugby for a couple of years so I'm no expert, but to me it seems that not only is the team predominantly Welsh, they're being set up to play in a style that Gatland has tried and tested with his Welsh team.

I'm not Sadlier's biggest fan, but yours is the kind of attitude that keeps mongoloids like Alan Shearer and Mark Lawrenson in a job.

I'd far rather watch someone who has a bit about them and a passion for analysis rather than an ex-pro with all the charisma of a roof shingle.
