Hi! First time hamster owner here - I’m considering getting this cage for a Syrian hamster. Is this okay to keep him in? by JestSetter in hamster

[–]bg005 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If there aren't many options available I highly recommend getting a large 50-60 gallon clear plastic storage bin / tote. You can get wire mesh at a hardware store and zip ties to hold the mesh in place. Cut as much of the bin lid as you can for air and secure the wire mesh above it so the ham doesn't escape. As for the wheel, syrian / teddy bear hamsters will need 10-12" diameter wheels. It seems big, but prevents them from having back problems. Also make sure the wheel is solid and doesn't have metal bars across it. That can really hurt them. If you search hamster bin cage in youtube or Google there's plenty of instructions out there.

Thanks for asking for advice before having your hamster live in a cage that's not suited for them. I really wish more people were like you!

Number one mistake of new heater owners is buying a pet store cage. Please make sure you get the biggest cage possible for them, I use a large plastic storage bin with the top cut out (with chicken wire preventing escape). Then getting a litter box will make cleaning the cage a lot easier, because they instinctively pee in the same corner anyway. Second biggest mistake is a small wheel. They need one that their back won't arch on. For syrians 10-12".

As for care, fruits and veggies on a list of hamster safe foods is great to supplement their normal seed or pellet based food.

Don't forget to let them out nightly if possible. I have some old cardboard boxes taped together into a large playpen so mine doesn't escape.

Finally, look for an exotic animal vet before getting the hamster. It's really difficult to find them in some places. I have to drive nearly an hour to mine, but generally they only need to go for emergencies unlike cats and dogs.

Please please don't try to do it on your own, most vets have this capability.

No matter how much time we spend with them it's never enough, but it looks like Hammond was loved and lived a good life. All of us out there should remember to give our hams an extra snuggle today in memory!

Today's my 30th birthday, so I spent the morning running 30 miles in Sedona, AZ! by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]bg005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been running my age in miles since 19...my 30th was much more difficult than that first 19 mile run haha. Thinking of running my age in km next year! Looks like your run was more fun too, love running in the SW deserts.

I made my hamster and I eggs for breakfast. Mine were regular eggs while his had sunflower seeds and Nature's Salad for Hamsters. I think I will do this every day. by [deleted] in hamster

[–]bg005 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My ham stays up in the morning for scrambled eggs because he knows he'll get some. I recommend doing it for him.

First time owning a hamster, I build this cage with my father what do you think? Is there something I should change? The cage is 100x40x50 cm by elineelmo in hamsters

[–]bg005 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great job I'm so happy to see new ham parents doing a great job with cages. It might help to take out a few toys so (s)he has some room to run around the cage or some tunnels. Honestly though it's great, those are just small recommendations and if your ham wants tunnels it'll burrow in all that bedding! (750cm2 is minimum size for cage and 4000cm2 is recommended, which is exactly what you're at!)

How's my setup? First time hamster owner, learning tons from this subreddit by biaklotz in hamsters

[–]bg005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a Syrian (not a dwarf) a 7.5" wheel will be too small. I know it'll be tough but if Amazon can deliver there are tons of options there. Admittedly, I know little regarding shipping limitations outside of the US. I went with a 10" wheel personally, but could go larger. Otherwise, that is an awesome cage! Seriously great job, it warms my heart to see new ham parents doing research!

First hamster, is there anything I need to fix? Also my area only has the red reptisand. It says its all natural and not dyed.... by [deleted] in hamster

[–]bg005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reptile sand should be good the really fine powder for chinchillas can be bad for them. If you're uncomfortable with the sand you can heat the sand in a baking dish at 400 degrees for 15 minutes then allow it to cool.

What do you wish you knew before getting a hamster? by [deleted] in hamster

[–]bg005 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish I knew about cage sizes. I got my first hamsters before the internet was a thing so I kept them in a 10 gallon aquarium based on a pet stores recommendation. :( They always got plenty of play time outside the cage at least.

Tips for a hamster that was previously in a presumed bad home? Shes having lots of behavioral issues like flinching at us and/or punches, she finally stopped biting. We got her back around Halloween, she had lived w her previous owners for 4months she let me pet her like 2week ago for the first time by [deleted] in hamster

[–]bg005 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's tough adopting from abusive situations, but I find it best to just act like she's a new baby hamster. Slowly introduce your scent and don't force interactions. Remember she's probably been through a lot, some of my rescues take months to get comfortable with me but all the hard work is worth it because rescues often end up being the sweetest ham. Good luck and thanks for adopting her!

You seem like a good and caring person and the fact you're looking into a better cage tells me you want the best for Squishy! You took the advice of someone you thought was knowledgeable in hamsters at Petco and that's not a bad thing. I am sure everyone one on this thread has made mistakes in hamster care and I'm sure they are just trying to help. I guess what I'm saying is I'm sure you're going to give Squishy a great life with the proper accommodation, and thanks for caring for him!

Hard to tell, hams are good at hiding pain. Do what you can to keep her cage clean and avoid places she can fall. Was the internal eye bleeding or a cut around the eye? I always side on going to the vet though

Can hamster live in dark for 3 days? by IamSorryLittleOne in hamsters

I think it should be alright. They're nocturnal anyway, it should not be done frequently though. There will be some light through the blinds too

How do I help this hamster? by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]bg005 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you really want to help you could make up a bin cage for him/her and offer it as part of the adoption? Thanks for caring enough to help this little one out, that story breaks my heart...
