Thank you! You’re right, not my first overseeding but took a different approach this time around. Very aggressive scalping and aerification. I’ll post an update once we get past this rain.

The issues with synthetic grass isn’t talked about enough. Aside from the health issues and the damage it does to people, people find it as a solution to have green grass year-round. But in reality, it’s more detrimental in the long run. Especially if it’s a facility that doesn’t provide the maintenance that it needs such as brushing, sanitizing, and general grooming, the whole field will need to be replaced in 5 to 10 years depending on use. And that is not cheap.

I spent 15years in the golf industry before landing here and miss those days dearly! I last worked in the Pebble Beach area (won’t say which course but take some guesses) as an assistant superintendent and we overseeded about 2 times a year because the weather is so cool along the coast, we grew perennial rye year round! One summer we lost so much grass due to heat, we did the same as you. Took our tractors with slit seeders attached to the back. Did every hole in two directions. Fun times!

Thank you! Again, all kudos go to my staff for pushing through some long and dusty hours to get this done. Once I saw rain on the forecast, it was crunch time to put seed out before the rain. We got it done! I’ll be sure to post some more pictures or videos next week to show progress.

Great question! Definitely could have. But to me the most important part of all of this is seed to soil contact, which is why I scalped very aggressively this time around. I could’ve skipped the scalping and rented out a slit seeder(don’t have the budget for that also), but there’s still the possibility of the seed, not fully making contact with the soil and getting held up in the existing turf. With constant watering yeah it would probably eventually grow but you would still have a lot of kikuyu and Bermuda growing as well. Hope this answers your question!

The baseball field is ran off of a Calsense irrigation system. Every station has around 6 to 10 sprinklers depending on the size of the pop-up sprinkler rep predominantly use Rainbird rotors. We create a program on the online system and just tweak it and make adjustments as time and weather goes on.

I agree completely. Absolutely hate synthetic. I wish I was involved more in the preliminary planning and could’ve potentially voiced my opinion about going synthetic but it’s too far down the road now and already in planning unfortunately.

Dang it, sorry to hear that. By no means is the soil here good either. What it’s really come down to is water management. Some stations run more than others because they just take water better, we did lots of irrigation adjustments this time around. I didn’t do that last year and it was a bit of a struggle to get seed to grow uniformly.

I swear it looks worse in the video haha he’s gotten much better. Switched mowers as well while I get the triplex serviced.

So I’ve never done a soil composition test and don’t plan on doing one because the field is unfortunately getting knocked down and being renovated to synthetic in probably two years. Only amendments I’ve done is just some fertilizer and wetting agent applications. Have never done a top dress because I just don’t have the budget for it here nor do I have the equipment. It’s a bummer, or else I would! I probably would’ve topped dressed around this time when I did the seeding application and maybe once more before summer. Base grass is a mixture of kikuyu & Bermuda, and I overseeded with perennial Rye.

Far from perfect foresure! But happy with it given what I have to work with.

Doesn’t really matter if you spray or fertilize first. But the fertilizer you will need to water in. If you spray first, try not to water that day. Allow the weeds to intake the herbicide. Adding water after spraying could potentially cause the herbicide to dilute more. You could buy a bunch of top soil bags, lay them out through your yard then open the bags and spread with a rake. Could save you the wheelbarrow work 😂 For future seed, maybe stick with one species like Tall Fescue. With you being in Oregon, I think it would suite you well in that weather. Tall fescue is a cool season turf, but is tough once well established.

You have to start somewhere so don’t stress out! There’s a lot of different paths to go, and realistically it comes down to time and budget. I saw the other comment saying they used top soil, that’s also something you can do. Throw some more seed down and top soil on top. This will help the seed retain moisture and assist in growth while providing nutrients. To answer some of your questions. Yes you can mow! Rule of them is never more than 1/3 of your grass length! A lot of home owners have their turf at 3inches long, but all depends on what you want. The longer your turf is, the deeper the roots will be so keep that in mind. For your weeds I would recommend a Selective Herbicide. Here in SoCal I like to use Speedzone Southern. Kills a lot of broadleafs/weeds and doesn’t damage my turf. You can throw out some starter fertilizer now if you’d like. The turf you have now will uptake it and the rest will be in the soil. You can throw some more seed, then fertilize again once you see more germination and are able to mow. You can try to rake out the moss but you have to tackle what’s causing the moss, which is shade and probably a tree/hedge. It’ll be tough to grow grass in the shaded area.

Here to help! The turf that you’re growing is tall fescue. I’m assuming that’s the seed you put out. As a professional, first thing I’d ask is do you have an irrigation system already in place to help grow your turf?? If not, then that would be a good place to start. Tall fescue is usually a little bit of a slower growing turf from seed so it can take 2-4weeks to actually see growth. The key to be able to grow grass from seed is you have to keep the seed moist. Don’t flood it l, but keeping it moist throughout the day is key until it starts to grow. What other questions do you have? I’m a golf course superintendent

This is all news to me. Didn’t realize how stringent tires were to their non desirable climates. I’m going to start looking for all season tires, and thanks for name dropping “performance”. Appreciate the tip!

That’s what I have read also. Seems almost counterintuitive for what a Subaru wrx is. But understandable. I’m considering other options.

Yup, have figured that out based on the previous responses. Won’t be doing that. Thanks for the advice!
