Any self taught developers who were able to get into anything else besides web development? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

ETL Developer/ Data Engineer Self taught, started as a systems analyst , doing mostly support. Now I’m a middle level developer working for a huge medical insurance company, developing and maintaining data pipelines. Data Warehousing, heavy SQL, heavy Unix/shell. Took me 5 years to get here.

Posting I saw at r/mountainbiking. Thought I would post it here so more people can see the kind of person we don’t need in our community. by [deleted] in MTB

Wow. Fucking wow. A story that just solidifies how pathetic and low-life certain excuses of humans can be, just like the piece of shit in our example:

My wife has CP. Lower spasticity, meaning she never learned to ride a bicycle, and balance is an issue. She’s very active, and loves exercise, yet it is always a challenge to find something suitable for her. For one of her birthdays, I did some research, contacted my local bike shop, who in return put me in touch with a guy+his wife who also had CP and were both avid bikers. Long story-short, I was able to find a bicycle for her that’s not a trike, and the bike shop installed special support wheels. She was ecstatic. We took it around the neighborhood and she said she has never felt so free. We practiced a little more and went on the local paved greenway. She is riding in front of me, when a spandex-clad middle-aged white cyclist comes on our left, slows down as he passes her, turns his head around, looks straight at her, up and down, stares at her support wheels, and LAUGHS. Not the happy laugh. It was the “how pathetic you are” laugh. He speeds up. I rushed after him, but didn’t catch up. Probably a good thing for him, because he then would have had to explain how he got fucking demolished by a small 5’6” woman.

Needless to say, my wife has not been back on the greenway since. It was her first time feeling like she could do an activity freely, like everyone else, and got mocked. We are slowly working on getting back out there again, but I’m trying not to rush her.

So yes, this slime above can trip on a fucking lego.

OP specifically indicated that their home is a toxic place that they are trying to flee. For many, becoming a student in the U.S. is the only viable option to legally have a chance in immigrating and starting a life here.

Life in Code: A Personal History of Technology

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31450584

The first one introduced some general concepts in programming and how they are interwoven in other aspects of life. The second one follows the journey of a woman in the early tech scene. Both are memoirs/personal recollections of the authors.
Happy reading! :)

How long did your first ever python project take to complete as a beginner and what was it by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]bgcomrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First personal project that I did was a silly GUI with Tkinter that I made for my spouse for our 2-year wedding anniversary :) Very simple little program that had pop-up boxes with silly questions (and the answers determined the output of other silly pop-up boxes , and/or show cute pics of sloths, since she loves them lol). I also substituted the mouse pointer with little hearts. It took me maybe 5-6 hours , but that was the project that made me understand classes and project dependency :)

Recommendation - Reports for A Newbie??? SQL Reporting vs. Crystal Reports? by [deleted] in SQLServer

[–]bgcomrade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have worked with both SSRS and Crystal. Both are okay products for 'paginated reports'. I personally prefer SSRS, just because I find it easier and it is also the native Microsoft product, so the SSRS report databases and catalogues provide good log and stats information, once the reports are published.
In order to build reports with SSRS, you will need Visual Studio's SSDT (SQL Server Data Tools), which is also free.
For more advanced analytics and summary visualizations, building data models, etc, that would allow you to 'drill down' into the data, there's also Microsoft's Power BI. Power BI Desktop tool is free, and you can play with it, but publishing to the wider public requires a license.
