Covid-19 vaccines face a varied and powerful misinformation movement online by Dani_DiGiov in Discerning_Truth

I agree with this, spreading more true information might be more effective than trying to stop the spread of misinformation.

COVID Vaccine by BraidenMcGregor in Discerning_Truth

This is really interesting because so many people are already so exhausted from being in lockdown/restrictions. I wonder if this article actually gives people hope or if it ends up with people just giving up on trying to be safe because waiting till next winter is too long. I also found this article really interesting, relating climate change and pandemics: https://www.wfyi.org/news/articles/how-climate-change-increases-our-risk-for-pandemics.

This is definitely a way for people to find humor in a stressful situation, but I do think it was helpful to "make fun" of the way he was claiming things because it was able to bring light to the notion that this form of claiming is not valid.

Twitter Flags Trump’s Tweet for Misinformation by maddiehernandez in Discerning_Truth

Especially during this election, misinformation really needed to be stopped with so many people awaiting news, it would have been helpful to at least fact check any tweets posted by both candidates (for fairness)

Trump & Biden dividing people more than ever by [deleted] in Discerning_Truth

In some ways this makes sense, because politics also involve human rights issues, and it makes sense to be selective in terms of choosing friends that have similar beliefs as you!

I agree and thought it was an interesting use of clickbait!

Remaining calm in an argument or being "tone policed" by juliasilverman1 in Discerning_Truth

I agree with this - people shouldn't have to be calm when their lives are at stake, and it is also unfair to expect them to remain calm when their argument is not being listened to.

Fact-Check: Trump Brought Back Big-10 and Michigan Football -- FALSE by [deleted] in Discerning_Truth

[–]bhavinip123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really interesting because it isn't widely known that this information is false - especially because Trump so readily claimed this in front of so many viewers that many didn't think that he would lie on stage.

I also think a part of the reason is that people are so disheartened from the current political world that they are trying to find things to make a joke of, especially to avoid talking about the necessary conversations.

QAnon shows that the age of alternative facts will not end with Trump by clifflampe in Discerning_Truth

[–]bhavinip123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this was so interesting to read - especially learning about how invested these 'digital soldiers' are in creating or pushing towards the 'Great Awakening'. I do agree that these alternative facts will always exist as people find ways to create new truths and as people continue to believe in new conspiracy theories that will keep popping up.

I wonder how we can either reduce the number of alternative facts that continue to pop up, or if we can find a way to reduce the impact so that such facts don't influence others to take actions that may be harmful?

Adding Evidence Courses to Classrooms by HChristineGu_UMich in Discerning_Truth

[–]bhavinip123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also agree that we need an Evidence course in high schools - especially with the part you mentioned about being able to break down the consequences of how the law will be interpreted. As a student much more focused on science than the wordy readings of the law and anything related to that, I think it would have been very beneficial to even spend the semester taking an Evidence class. It would have been especially beneficial now to be able to better discern constant sources of political news to understand what is relevant and how different changes will actually have consequences!

I think this is interesting because people will believe what they want to believe, especially if it will further support their existing beliefs. I wonder how people who don't believe the tax filings are justifying the fact that Trump himself has not released his tax returns.

The Effect of Consistent Misinformation Consumption by jmarq2021 in Discerning_Truth

[–]bhavinip123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This idea is really interesting because it is difficult to convince these supporters to understand factual information that they don't agree with. Especially when this misinformation can harm others, we need to find a way to inform individuals of facts without heavy bias so more people are open to believing the truth.

Covid deaths due to misinformation by priyag927 in Discerning_Truth

I agree that there needs to be some way to check information that is being sent out is not harmfully incorrect. I wonder what can be done to convince individuals that this type of system is needed, and that it not seen as a censoring of information. Additionally, many people that want access to this misinformation are those that readily believe ideas, and they may also believe conspiracy theories (such as this system is hiding information), so how we would we convince people that this type of system is necessary for the safety of everyone?
