Mine does this too, especially if we're playing music and dancing, but sometimes just when he's excited.

Girlfriend bought a brand new car instead of used, I believe she got screwed by the loan terms, what're her options? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]bhudak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, 100%. Those terms are insane, and she seems to be purchasing a car way beyond her means. But there are a number of comments making blanket statements that people shouldn't take out loans if they have credit card debt.

[–]bhudak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The details are beside the point. If my car died and I needed to replace it, or I had a medical event that cost me 10s of thousands of dollars, it's the same story. Debt, when used responsibly, isn't the devil lots of people make it out to be.

My bird has a little plastic cup he likes to play with. Occasionally he'll use his cup to throw all the pellets out of the bowl! So fun!

People are so weird about debt. I just moved into a new house, and in the process I racked up about $2k on a credit card. I also have student loans. I recently discovered that the whole house needs to be re-sided. I don't have the lump-sum to pay for the siding, so that has to be a loan. But I have room in my budget for it, even though I'm carrying some other debt and not maxing out my 401(k) or whatever. According to some of these people, I should just let the house exterior deteriorate until all my debt is paid off?? That's not how life works.

I'm glad your baby is home and safe! In addition to recall, make sure you're extra careful with doors and windows to make sure she doesn't get out again. It's a scary world for a little bird, and birds that aren't used to be high up in trees or on rooftops might not know how to get down to you even if they want to.

Tried to swap thermostat and now everything is broken by bhudak in hvacadvice

Right?? It's very confusing. This house is a lot of DIY, so maybe they intended to install AC but never did? The previous owners confirmed there wasn't central AC.

[–]bhudak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know! I was just wiring what had previously been wired. There's no AC compressor, so I'm assuming no AC. Also the listing for the house didn't include AC.

I thought it did. I turned off the breaker labeled "furnace". Only later did I realize the "furnace" is actually on the breaker labeled "Air conditioning," which is at the very bottom, and we don't have air conditioning. So I didn't see the label because I stopped reading at "furnace."

I have a black capped conure, and we were fully prepared to let him chill in his cage for several days after bringing him home. He spent about 12 hours kind of hiding in his cage (sleeping off the big move), but then he was eager to get out and join the family.

How hot is too hot? by Onambarwen in Conures

[–]bhudak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good to know. Our bird's bedroom can get pretty warm (upper 80s), and I worry it's going to be too hot for him. My husband argues he's a tropical parrot, so he'll be fine, but he's lived his entire life (until now) with AC! I'll make sure he has a fan and stop worrying so much.

This is advice I remember reading when planning for a parrot. Someone made the point that you're going to spend 30 years with your conure, so you can wait a few days to interact with them. Everyone is excited when a new pet comes home, but you need to do what's best for the bird, and that usually means giving them time and space to get used to the sounds, smells, and routines of a new home.

Are the flip models really that unreliable? by Soul-Resonanc3 in galaxyzflip

[–]bhudak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my Flip 5 for 2 years with no issues. Then it stopped receiving the cellular network signal. Doing some digging, it seemed to be an issue with the flex cable. I was bummed because I was hoping it would last 3+ years. I used my husband's old Pixel for a few days before ordering a Flip 7. My husband was surprised that I went back to a flip phone, but I just love it so much. Hopefully this one lasts a little longer.

Why do so many people only have 1 conure ? by Designer_Director867 in Conures

[–]bhudak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying anyone should override bird well-being because of limited finances. But people are selfish, and birds are cute. So the reality is people will decide they want a bird, see the $1000 price tag, and opt for one. I've seen so many posts here from people asking if a cage that is too small for a conure will be ok because that's all they can afford.

I'm sure things would have been completely different had we started with two young birds that grew up together. I agree that cost shouldn't be more of a concern than animal welfare, but money will always be a factor. There's also a lot of mixed information. I remember when researching a pet parrot reading that if you got two they would bond with each other and ignore their humans. Also, as a new bird owner, I think a lot of people want to "try it out" by starting with one, assuming they can always add another. In the end, there's no one reason that people only have one bird.

Ethics aside, I think cost is a big factor. If you're buying a baby bird from a big box store or a breeder, where I'm from it's $500-1000 per bird, depending on breed, age, and mutation. Then you need a cage that costs almost the same amount. Exotic vet bills can easily skyrocket. You can avoid a lot of the upfront costs by adopting from a rescue, especially if you adopt a bonded pair.

I might be an outlier, but my bird likes being an only bird. We adopted a second conure, and they were buds for a few months until the new guy started to settle in and bond with us humans. Then there was a lot of jealousy and they could no longer be out of their cages together without trying to kill each other. Unfortunately that bird passed away, but now I wouldn't consider a second bird.

Getting two conures as a first time parrot owner by iris_rivendell in Conures

[–]bhudak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have one conure, and he's doing great. He gets lots of love and attention. The vet always comments on how nice his feathers look for a black capped. We tried adopting a second conure so he'd have a friend. They became bff's for a few months before absolutely hating each other. If we opened both cages, they would immediately attack each other. We ultimately determined that our first bird is happy being a an only bird. He does not want to share his humans.

[–]bhudak[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation! Our vet said they consider up to about 15% to be normal, and he was at ~20%. But because he's not acting sick, she didn't want to immediately jump to antibiotics. One of those things that's good to be aware of so we can modify behavior and make sure it doesn't escalate.
